Hey guys -

What are your most productive methods for fishing the Pop-R?

Posted

I like to use small twitches so it spits and sputters and sort of walk the dog with it. I have better luck doing this then just plugging it along.

I'm a three pops, and pause guy.  My grandfather taught me that way, and that's just how I roll.

I cast it and let it sit for a 5 count. 3 pops quick and then a 5 count pause. My old man taught it to me and its worked for years.

I'm sure other methods will work, but if I get out of sync, I can visualize my dads hand making contact with the back of my head lol

I prefer the slimmer Rico's and Splash-It's and speed retrieve them like a panicked shad. Let it rest a few seconds before starting the retrieve.

Pop, pop, pop.....all the way to the boat.

Guy I know wraps the tail of a Pop R with a Storm Suspenstrip...he does VERY well on this bait...no cadence on the retrieve...rips it back to the boat...

Cast, wait for ripple to fade, then "walk walk...pause....pop...pause...walk walk ....pause....pop" etc....

Let it sit till ripples go away then a pop pop pause. If that doesn't seem to work I try to walk it in one spot as much as I can. I've had times when working the bait less has done more.

Sounds like your Dad and mine would have gotten along just fine... :dazed-7:

Untill they stop biting it. But seriously, every day is different. Some days the topwater bite last all day, sometimes it's over about as fast as it starts.

Seasonally for me the best action is right around spawn/post spawn and stop once it gets past the bluegill spawn and hot. April til June

Now it is more walking type baits like spook or jumpin minnow.

I use them year round, any time of day and without any doubt my favorite way to bass fish, or any kind fish for that matter. Like most I pop a few times and let it pause a few seconds, no real methodic cadence.  I've had 1 on my bass rod for over a week, all I've been using.

twitch, twitch, pause. I like to make them walk. I speed them up if the fish are really chasing or if I'm fishing spotted bass. For some reason they always seem to prefer the bait to be moving faster.

Glenn,

1.  Have fresh line.

2.  Tie directly to the Pop-R.

3.  Throw out - let sit until ripples go away - pop it - reel in some slack - pop it - reel in some slack - always leave some slack in the line. Change pattern to a pop-pop-wait or pop-pop-pop-wait cadence to try to find out what the bass want.

4.  Throw Pop-R parallel to grass and pads and around docks, piers, pilings and other structure you see.

5.  Make sure there is a feather on the tail hook.

6.  Consider changing front hook to one size larger.

7.  Use mono to help keep the lure on top of the water. I don't like mono leaders on braid due to one more weak spot in the line.

8.  Use a spinning rig.

9.  Wait a second to two after the strike to set the hook. Easier said than done.

10. If bass misses the Pop-R throw a Senko or YUM Dinger to same spot as fast as possible.

11. Throw Pop-R first thing in the morning and then during the day. So many of us throw it at dawn and don't touch it for the rest of the day.

How do you fish a Pop-R or a RICO?
