loudcherokee Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 been thinking of picking up another new baitcaster. The Lews speed spool line has intrigued me. is anyone familiar with all three of the following? Lews speed spool Lews speed spool tournament MG Lews speed spool tournament Pro opinions? pros? cons? I'm starting to wonder after reading reviews if I should have spent an extra $40 and got the tournament MG from gander mountain instead of the AG Promax. LC Quote
5dollarsplash Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I got the tournament MG last year, and its probably my favorite reel. They just seem so smooth, not sure why, but its worked wonderfully for me. Bang for buck I think Lews is hard to beat. I wish I would've been more aware of them a few years ago, I would probably have a boat full of Lews for my bass gear. Quote
loudcherokee Posted June 13, 2013 Author Posted June 13, 2013 those are my thoughts too. Had I known more about the Lews, I probably would have left GM with that instead of the Promax, given most of the reviews I've read. LC 1 Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Do a thread search for Lews and you should find plenty of information, reports, reviews, controversy and so on. Over all, those who own Lews have been very happy with the brand. I own 5 different models myself. It's another option out there. Quote
TrapperJ Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 The one i got the $99, SS1H Model, it is currently my favorite reel, paired it with a 7' Medium Action Duckett. I will buy more Lew's reels when the time comes for sure! Sooooooo smooooooth. Quote
Arv Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I would check out the Tournament Speed Spool as well. Its my only Lews reel but its one of my favorite Quote
BassOnKlinger Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I'm glad this thread got started. I just started looking at the Lews Speed Spool. For only $100, people seem to love it. Good reputation too. I got the 5-gear and 6-gear so far. Might just go ahead and rig all my combos w/ Lews Speed Spool since it's so in-expensive compared to other higher quality reels. Quote
ColdSVT Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 awesome reels! ive fished the speed spool and the tourny mg and they were both great. super comfy in the hand and buttery smooth my next reel is gonna be a tourny pro. ad much as I love my curados and revo STXs the TP is where im going. great reels and a great price for the performance! Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 My nextreel may be a lew's. I really like my chronarchs buy I really wanna see what the fuss is about with the tourney pro. Quote
loudcherokee Posted June 13, 2013 Author Posted June 13, 2013 Man, the more and more I'm reading about them, the more I'm thinking I rushed into the promax last week when I was looking for a new baitcaster. I seriously want one now. Quote
harmon Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I used one for a few cast while I was in Georgia, my son has the tourney pro. It was real nice and smooth, but I did not catch a fish so I can't make an accurate determination on how good it is with some torque on it. Quote
Fireguyfrank58 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Just ordered a TP online this morning and has already shipped out. I have been reading so much on these and needed a new reel I just couldn't not buy one. My reels I am using are 15+ years old and 2 bearing models, I can't wait to see how smooth it is. Quote
hooah212002 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Having just went through this sort of search, I came to the conclusion that one is likely to beat themselves up far too much over reel choice. At this price point ($100 and higher), there really isn't a "bad" choice. It's not like the difference in the uber low end models where $10 means something that lasts one season to something that doesn't last 2 fish. I went last night with the intention of grabbing a Speed Spool ($99 model), but they were out. Compared to other reels in it's price range, I think it is a bit on the heavy side and the Citica and Revo S are more low profile. I realize I may not be the best person to say this, but you should take the few in that price range that come highly recommended and pick the one that picks you. It really comes down to personal preference. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 I like the Lews series of reels. I have had a few for over a year and they are going strong. For the price to performance ratio they seem to be quite good. Have recommended them to a few friends and they really like them. A solid line of reels at popular pricepoints that can be found discounted quite often. Quote
SwampLife Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I bought one and a month later I bought another one.. Definitely a lews fan and recommend them to any one that is in the market.. My dad is a quantum guy and been fishing quantum probally before I was born or at least as long as I can remember (I'm 25).. Any way, he fished with one of mine for a hour and he now owns one and plans on buying more.. IMO its the best bang for the buck expecially if you get them 50 dollars off on the famous auction site, brand new! If you read this thread and think that the people who posted good things about it are just saying that..go to every major fishing site (basspro, TW, etc) and read reviews.. I challenge you to find 5 bad reviews on all sites combined! I think I may have found 1 or 2.. Even the 100 dollar speed spool is awesome and near impossible to find a bad review! Quote
livetofish28 Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I have a tournament mg that I absolutely love. It's my favorite reel by far it's extremely smooth even when you have considerable amounts of torque on it. It's got all of the clicky's on it that I like like the cast control knob and the star drag. All of the reels I get in the future are going to be Lew's besides a revo sx I highly recomend it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 14, 2013 Super User Posted June 14, 2013 OK loud, here is the deal on Lews reels. A friend who repairs rods and reels (he shall go nameless) told me that the two best reels on the market today are Shimano and Lews. Seems both of the reels have less plastic parts than their competition. This guy has no dog in any reel competition. He just repairs and services rods and reels for both salt and freshwater. If he says Lews is the top of the line then Lews is the top of the line. Just a word to the wise. Quote
loudcherokee Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 yup. I think its settled. I'm either going to add a lews to the collection or exchange my Abu promax this weekend. LC Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I have been amazed at Lew's for the past two years, starting with the Tournament, and would highly recommend it over an MG. This was such a great reel I sold my Castaic's Curado's and Chronarch's, and own 9 Lews reels now. They are all way better reels than there price would indicate!! After servicing reels for over 30 years, I will agree with Sam's buddy. They are built with tighter tolerances and better part's than most. The TP is nice but the BB1 is a the sweetest caster for any reel costing twice the money, and the Team Lew's Gold is worthy of consideration over any high end reel available from any manufacturer at any price!! I think the BB1 is unbeatable for casting over 1/4oz. for around $110.00, and the team gold if throwing the lightest lures on up, and available for less than $175.00, after 4 of them I think they and the BB1 are best buys, if throwing heavier than 1/2 to 3oz. the Super Duty is untouchable!! Quote
loudcherokee Posted June 15, 2013 Author Posted June 15, 2013 well I did it. traded the promax for a tournament mg and paid the difference. got it home and put it on my lightning rod, spooled it up with 30lb powerpro, and played with it in the yard. I was tossing around a 1/2 ounce terminator spinnerbait, and I can already tell this thing is going to be amazing on the water. it reels smooth, casts smooth, no backlashes, and I was getting good distance casts without even putting anything into it. is it 6am yet? lol LC Quote
trupp30 Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 You made a good choice. I have a speed spool tourn. pro and love it. I have a chonarch and I like my Lew's more. Great all-around reel. Good luck with your reel. Quote
78Staff Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Pretty much have converted completely over to Lews... formerly a Zillion and Chronach user...both nice reels, but Zillions are heavy and very expensive now, the Chronarch's just didn't feel right to me with the handle slop common to a lot of Shimano models. Not saying anything bad again both very good options. But, I've switch over completely, right now I think I have 5 Tournament Pro's, and 3 BB1's, and will pick up a Super Duty when the LH model comes out in the fall. The lower Lews models are solid and a good price point, but I think I would start with the Tournament or Tournament MG line at a minimum to get the 14lb drag. The lower tier options are 10lb. I hear fantastic things about the upper end Team series, but since they are RH only at this point I have not had a chance to try them. Quote
