Fishwhittler Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 David Wright and Robinson Cano will be the two captains and get to choose their teams. So, who do you think will be on the teams/who would you like to see in the derby? Post your picks. My picks (in no particular order except putting Stanton first): Giancarlo Stanton Miguel Cabrera Yoenis Cespedes Yasial Puig Prince Fielder Chris Davis If Stanton is available, they'd be insane to not pick him. Same with Cabrera. Cespedes and Puig would be something to watch for sure, and Fielder has already been there and put on a show. Chris Davis…leading MLB in home runs with 20…'nuff said… Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 Like what you have for the most part. Stanton is iffy and I don't know if Puig is gonna make the cut, he is only been up a week. I would replace him with J. Upton on the braves, slumping lately but he hit 12 bombs in april, finally got another one last night. I haven't had the chance to see too much of Cespedes, and I would deffinately like to see him the few highlights I saw he can luanch the ball. Quote

Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 No love for Domonic Brown? Too early no coffee LOL man he slipped my mind, I have J-Up on my fantasy team so that is why I pick him.....I would kick stanton to the curb and put in Brown. Quote
Fishwhittler Posted June 13, 2013 Author Posted June 13, 2013 Too early no coffee LOL man he slipped my mind, I have J-Up on my fantasy team so that is why I pick him.....I would kick stanton to the curb and put in Brown. Stanton has been injured this year (hamstring) and so has not had a chance to put up big numbers, but he might have the most raw power of any player in baseball. Domonic Brown is 26 and has been in baseball since 2006, spending most of that time in the minor leagues. Prior to this year he played in a total of 147 MLB games in three partial MLB seasons. He's having a breakout year, but I would rate very few if any players ahead of Stanton on the power board even though he doesn't have the contact skills of Miguel Cabrera and strikes out a lot. Stanton is two years younger and has a higher ceiling than Brown, and if he's able to play 150+ games a year and learn some plate discipline he'll be a monster. Puig is certainly a bit of a stretch considering his recent debut, but there's no denying he has loads of power. Don't need anything else for the HR Derby. One player I probably should have put on the list is Bryce Harper, maybe instead of Fielder. Probably not going to happen, but a derby lineup of Wright, Cano, Stanton, Cabrera, Davis, Cespedes, Harper, and Puig would be awesome to watch if only because of the size of the homers. I'd much rather see Harper than Fielder. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 I agree with you on Stanton skills but my reasons he and puig are out is I personally want to see the hot hitters that are blowing up this year. Let Stanton get on his feet and I am sure next yr will be awesome especially if he gets out of Miami If your going on count past or future potential then add in the Josh Hamilton, Beltre and Jose Bautista? With that said how about Tulo and CarGo out in Colorado they are 1 and 2 in slugging? And David Ortiz has mashed 13 in 50-70 less ABs than the other guys up there. On a side note I think it would be cool if the fans voted in the HR contest competitors. Take like the top 5 vote getters from each league. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 Here are a couple more, Trout and Moreland. Oh yeah I also agree Harper would be a good show but man that knee. Hope he isn't out too long. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 I want Harper in there so he can flop there too.....I can't stand that guy and all the hype. I won't completely derail your thread though I like Fielder too, he is just entertaining Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 Not to Hijack the thread but who do you think the starters will be? Wainwright for NL and Darvish for AL? Then again you have Iwakuma and bullfrog Bucholz that could be considered or Kershaw and Harvey in the NL Quote

Hope he isn't out too long. Trout really isn't a power hitter like these others are, though he wouldn't be out of place in the HR derby. He's a five-tool player and power isn't his top tool. Hamilton is not interesting to watch, which is one reason I didn't pick him. Mitch Moreland...I'd take Chris Carter over him in the HR derby. Speaking of Carter, that's another guy with ridiculous power. With the exception of Davis and Cabrera (and Fielder, though I've changed my pick to Harper if he's healthy), the guys on my list are young players on the rise who have massive amounts of power. To me they'd be much more interesting to watch in a HR contest than Carlos Gonzalez or Bautista, or even Beltre. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 I have not seen Carter play, but I hear he can hit them. Sounds like he is another Carlos Pena/Adam Dunn type guy though. I dunno how fun Davis would be to watch. You do have me amped to see Cepedes! and Fielder is fun too. Speaking of boring, I understand it is in NY and the Mets stadium, but how does that BUM Wright get to enter and be captain? Man that is a crock, give me Stanton, Puig or Harper with one good leg over him....Sesh even Josh Hamilton. Quote

That dude doesn't hit too many, but when he does, he crushes it. Quote

Man that is a crock, give me Stanton, Puig or Harper with one good leg over him....Sesh even Josh Hamilton. Pretty much spot-on with Carter. He's a Ryan Howard-type with more strikeouts and huge home runs. I'm also kind of "meh" on Davis. Here's some Cespedes for ya: It's just insane how hard he hits the ball. Wright's a legitimate power hitter who's had some 30-HR seasons and quite a few 20-HR seasons. His selection isn't like Prince Fielder choosing Rickie Weeks. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 I love how most of Cespedes homers are left center to right center. He just stays on the ball so well and drives it, and when he does pull it he crushes it. His head never moves and on the pulled shots rarely does he open up. Man that is a great swing! Wright had 1 30 hr season, I wouldn't call him a legit prenial HR hitter. He would fall into the Cargo, Trout territory IMO. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted June 13, 2013 Super User Posted June 13, 2013 I pick dave Kingman to win it this year. 1 Quote

That dude doesn't hit too many, but when he does, he crushes it. I always seem to overlook scherzer. Last year he had a crappy start and I dropped him man I regretted that. Never woulda guessed he would have gotten better. I dunno I still think Darvish has an edge. Quote

WarEagleBassin Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Evan Gattis....No doubt about it. He is country strong. 14 home runs and he isn't even a full time player. HR derby is made for him. Quote

But, his power isn't quite the same as what it was before he was injured in 2011. I'd put him a step below Gonzalez and Trout. Quote

More than I thought he had, I dunno, he has been stuck in irrelevance for me, playing on the mets, getting hurt. Just don't really see or hear much about him. He still should be captain though LOL Quote
