Yesterday I lost 2 fish on a KVD 1.0.  I am new to crankbaits and honestly I never lost a fish due to the hooks like that.  Each bass was near wooden structure in the water near the shore (I fish from the shore).  My question is what are the chances of the same bass hitting the same lure?  What would you have done in that situation?  Change lures?....if so to what?  Change the color of the crank?  Thank you in advance.

I think when it comes to bass they rarely hit a lure again after actually being hooked. Pickerel are a different story though, they are absolute idiots. My dad's friend said (not 100% sure if this happened) he was thrwing a shakey head, hooked up, line snapped... Throws back in same spot hooks up and lands a bass with the same shakey head in his lip that he had just lost...

If you haven't already done so I would change the hooks, and on the hook set make sure you use a sweeping motion. Also keep in mind fish do come off often, watch the pros and see how frustrated they get when it happens to them. As far as the same fish twice, I haven't a clue.

I made this thread about changing out the hooks leaving the pond on the way to bass pro.....haha

I do realize it happens often but I never use cranks and never lost one like that so I wasnt sure what was the right thing to do in that situation. I know that cranks are reaction baits and wasnt sure if it was possible for the same bass to react to the same lure. I also thought about throwing something like a senko but didnt end up doing it. I was just thinking overall what should I have done. I know the bigger bass hangs out in the same area for the most part.

I did reviews about the hooks but it was my first time using the 1.0. All my new 1.0's already have new hooks and working on changing my new 1.5's once i get a split ring plier.

When I lose a fish I come down with a bad case of profane torrets, or throw a senko in on another pole where it missed, or both.

Sometimes a change in color will get you better hookups.

If.you got a big fish on and they get off. I think they well call.it a day at the dinner table.. but you never know but again highly unlikely imo sorry to be so negative but thats fish that keeps you fishing... change the hooks for sure !

My opinion based on years of observation has led me to believe that it's rare for a bass to strike again after they made contact with the lure once.

Hooks on crankbaits and all lures should be checked for sharpness. I have a KVD 1.5 and haven't had a problem with losing fish. But if you fish crankbaits, you'll lose fish, it goes with the territory.

However, I wouldn't draw conclusions based on losing two fish on one outing. Everyone loses fish including the best pros in the world.

Over the years I've had streaks where I'd lose the majority of fish I hooked over a given stretch of time and other streaks where I landed just about everything that struck and never was able to explain either phenomenon.

it could be possible the fish short striked and barely got hooked in the lip and it eventually ripped out. i never change out factory crankbait hooks just to change them. they work fine for me

What gear are you throwing cranks on? Often I see people throwing cranks on braid and a big stout rod and the problem is they're tearing out the hooks on the set. This may be known already, but you don't have to swing for the fences with cranks. A nice steady sweep sideways is the best way to set the hook and maintain that pressure. I recommend a glass rod or a medium action graphite if you don't like glass.

You also may be just getting the defensive strikes that are meant to stun the prey. Changing color and or speed/cadence can help. Or plainly, you might have just had bad hook ups. Not everything is guranteed,  thats why fishing is great. It's always a challenge!

This is the reason why I ended up changing the hooks....

I use a 6' St Croix Premier Medium with a Shimano Stradic CI4.  I actually was using braid yesterday.  It was the first time using cranks too so i didnt know what to expect.  I guess I learn really quick...haha.

I've had several fish hooked up good and had them tangle in branches and break off. More than once I've gone back and caught these fish, one with my hook and senco still in it's mouth and once with a hole where my jig had been. Both times it was only a couple hours later.

What did you use to catch each fish again?....or did you stick with the same type of bait?

whenever I have a fish strike at and miss or come off on a treble hook lure(crankbait, topwater lure), I always throw a senko back in the area of the miss, or sometimes a crawfish imitator...several times I have caught a fish doing this....only problem is I don't know for certain it was the same fish

only time ive had this happen is when ive been snagged on an underwater stump or log and pulled my line really hard to break it and the hook bent and freed the lure. the only time i ever seen a fish bend a hook is when im using them gold thin wire abeerden hooks. im not saying big fish cant bend a treble hook, just that i havent had it happen personally myself...

LOL.  Had that happen to me with a subwoofer.  I never said anything because I didn't think anyone would believe me.  Pickerel are dumb!

Yeah i can honestly say i never got hung up at all with that lure that day.  I seen the bass hit the lure too and it was 4-5lb minimum.  I immediately changed colors to try and get the same bass to hit it.  I tried for about half hour and had no luck so I left the pond and when I came home I inspected my lures for the day and found the hook like that.

Yeah i think this is your issue, not neccesarily the hooks. You can't use high power gear with lower wire hooks. Crankbaits need some play in your set up, avoid superman hooksets and make sure you have a little "play in the retrieve.

Yup I found that out quick.  I wanted to try braid with my new set up as I mainly fish plastics.  When this incident happened, it was my first time using crankbaits and at the time did not realize that braid had that type of effect.  I changed my line to fluro, changed my hooks and went out the next day and caught some fish.  Although i would not use braid while fishing cranks again, I would not take the risk and I will be changing out the hooks from now on.

Revival, both of the fish were caught later the same day on a weightless rigged 4" Berkley power noodle. This was one of the best follow up baits/finesse baits I ever used. Berkley discontinued it. But Ive also caught previously hooked fish the same day using weightless zoom French frys (centipede)

My Uncle had a fish break the line on an old wiggle wart. He said it was a Giant. Next day went back to same spot put another wiggle wart on in same color and after a few casts caught the same fish. It was 7+ pounds. He knew it was the same fish cause he got his first wiggle wart back. I dont know how long it will take to get the fish to bite again, but eventually it will. Go back to that spot and catch that joker!

Most of the time in my experience bass don't come back after the initial strike, but nothing is absolute as I've had them hit the lure a second or third time.  Peacocks on the hand don't give up until they have the bait.  That bent hook looks like most of mine as I'm lazy to change them, but when I do it's a 3x or 4x hook.

1.  Change out hooks on your crankbaits to one size larger. The pros do this all the time. You may want a longer shank, too. I like the Mustad Triple Grip Wide Gap Treble hooks, #36233BLN.

2.  Never, ever have the slightest slack in your line after your sweep set. Any slack and the fish waves bye-bye.

3.  Remember that treble hook baits have a tendency to act like a pendulum and work their way out of the fish's mouth. Once again, no slack in the line. Keep rod tip in the air. Never point rod tip directly at the bass.

4.  Some bass will strike at the crankbait to kill or injure it and not actually inhale it. You can hook these fish on the front of their lips and sooner or later during the fight the hooks will come lose and you are standing there wondering what happened.

5.  If you do lose a nice bass on a treble hook bait do what we all do: throw down the rod and reel on the boat; stand up; and scream your lungs out saying some dirty words. Stomp around the boat a few times, too. Happens to all of us sooner or later.

Thanks, good to know.

Thanks for the info!  I dont own a boat so I screamed from shore.  Funny thing is that there was a couple relaxing, laying in the grass about 20ft from me and also quite a few people walking their dogs.  I am not usually emotional like that but after having a rough month and that being the second fish lost not to mention actually seeing the size of the fish, i couldnt help myself.  Oh well, i have a score to settle with that bass.
