BassOnKlinger Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Just got a 7' KVD composite MH/M casting rod. Need to add a reel to complete the setup. This setup will be primarily used for fishing deep cranks. At the moment, the new Smoke 5.3:1 has been recommended. Price range: $150-$250 I'm new to bass fishing so any additional cranking advice is appreciated (lure types, line, etc). What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance. Quote
bigdave39355 Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 lews makes a crankin reel. never used it, but the other model lews i've got have worked flawlessly. dave Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 The Lews BB1 is supposed to be the bomb when it comes to distance and working cranks. Be advised though it uses a pawl type anti-reverse, not instants like you're used to. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Shimano Chronarch 200e5 if youre a righty or 201e5 If ur a lefty. Had my eye on one for awhile now. Chronarchs are great reels. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 I'd 2nd the Chronarch or Curado G5/E5. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 You might find a gently used CTE200GT in your price range. 1 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 I have the 200E5. Love it. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 I like the E5 Shimanos, (Curado or Chronarch) and the Gen 2 Revo Winch. If I were buying a new cranking reel today, I would look hard at the Daiwa Lexa. Quote
BassOnKlinger Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 Thank you all. I don't know much about equipment yet so your advice is greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 I had a Curado E5 that I was very fond of, I replaced it with a Gen 2 Winch. Had to switch to left hand reels is why I changed. That said I would look hard at the BB1 if I were in the market now. The reason I went with the Winch is line capacity and drag power, I'm secretly hoping to use it for striper fishing, that and I got it half off Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted June 11, 2013 Super User Posted June 11, 2013 Look for a used Curado 200DPV ( or 201DPV if you want LH retrieve). I have one and it's fantastic. Heavy.........yes. But IMHO it's the best 5:1 cranking reel ever built. Quote
Hogsticker Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 The Daiwa Lexa has a 4:9:1 that picks up a low 20" per turn. Solid all aluminum reel with no flexing when tossing those big 1 ounce deep divers. They can be found on that auction site for 100-110 bucks. The Lews Tournament MG has a low gear ratio that picks up 23" per turn. It can also be found for the same price. I won't dish out a ton of cash for a cranking reel, only the reels I need to cast lighter/finesse stuff. For chunking and winding these two reels should serve you well. Quote
Quillback Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Revo Winch, retails for $199. You can throw deep diving cranks on it all day. Great for A-rigs also. There's also the Revo Toro Winch 50 which has been discontinued, but you can find them NIB on the auction site, and you'll see them pop up on sale on the fishing forums. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 The Winch and E5 Shimanos are good choices. The Daiwa Crazy Cranker is another option. A budget option is the PQ on sale. If I remember correctly they come in both 5.1:1 and 4.?:1. I'm using a 4600 C3 Ambassaduer. The 23" IPT is middle of the road which I like since I'm not cranking 20' deep all day usually. Quote
stkbassn Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 If it doesn't have to be Quantum I'd get a Chronarch or Curado 200E 5.....can't be beat. 1 Quote
BassOnKlinger Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 The Lews Speed Spool has caught my eye. Seems to be a good introductory baitcaster. And for only $100, it seems pretty solid. I've yet to read a bad review on it. Anyone have experience with this reel? I noticed a couple people mentioned Lews above. The BB1 is in my price range, but I'm hesitant to go all out for my first combo. I have experience w/ baitcasters, but this is really my first summer getting serious about bass fishing. Quote
livetofish28 Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 As previously posted the Lew's tournament mg has a low ratio for cranking and a deep high capacity spool for long casts its my favorite reel of all my setups Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 I second the Calcutta TE GT also as a cranking reel, buttery smooth and built like a tank. Quote
