Is there any difference between the lews speed spool ($99 version) and the tournament MG ($129 version) other than the drag system? Looking at the specs everything else looks the same.

Thanks,

Joe

Personal opinion, but I was looking at both of these last year.  The metal and higher drag ended up being the decider for me.  If a pike or ski grabs a spinner, I feel confident I can get my spinner back as long as he doesn't bite the line.  I probably could with the 10lb drag and plastic construction, but I like the added beef and and feel.

the tournament MG has a metal tension knob with clickies, carbon composite drag with 14lbs of drag versus rulon drag with 10lbs of drag, a metal drag star instead of plastic and 95mm handle vs. 85mm. there's also a 0.3 ounce weight difference. see: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/839/lewslineup.jpg/

The handle is also swept on the MG

I just posted this in another thread, but would start at the Tournament or Tournament MG level at a minimum, due to gaining the 14lb drag over the lower end models.  But they are all solid choices, imo.

The Tournament MG also has greater line capacity:  12#/120 for the Speed Spool VS 12#/150 Tournament MG.

Also, (and I'm not sure about this, so don't quote me), I think the newest Speed Spools have swept handles and drag stars.

I own both the Speed Spool and the MG. I love them both! Best baitcasters in their price range for sure. The MG is smoother and the tension knob and star drag clicks and are metal whereas the Speed Spool has a plastic tension knob and star drag that does not click. If I were to choose I'd get the MG.
