5/8 Oz Good Enough For Topwater Rod

I sold my orginal setup up like a dummy in winter. I was looking at the ethos inshore among a few other rods, not trying to cheap out but trying to get somewhat cheap< as topwater frogs has became my fav. This rod will be for topwater plugs.  IS 5/8 oz good max weight for this rod. all it will see is pop-rs, sammy, spooks, and the kvd water dogs. Looking at my baits, none feel heavy. If i remember correctly I thin the kvd water dogs are heaviest at 1/2oz/ So would the 5/8 be descent power.

What's the power rating of the rod itself? That will determine if you have the backbone needed to stick and fight the fish.  I personally will not use anything less MH. I use H for my frogging rod. If you have the right power rating, the weight of your bait should not be an issue.

Believe it is s MH, yea my frog is a HXF

Though I had a old medium rod that cold do 3/4 and one of my old bps enigma rods could do 1 ounce for a MH

Oh, it's only rated to 5/8oz.

The rod I'm going to use is determined mainly by how thick the cover is.  Most of the time it's a med 8/17 inshore spinning rod with max lure 3/4 oz, works fine for any kind of lure.  Today fishing a pond with no vegetation it was a light spinning 6'6, probably max lure of around 1/4 oz and that's what my top water lure weighed, not a problem with 5# bass, it was fun too on the light tackle.

I use a Powell Max 702c for the same techniques from time to time. It's a good topwater rod.

I would suggest a 703; 7' fast action 3 power/medium hvy casting rod rated 1/4 oz- 3/4 oz, your basic all around bass rod.

Lure weight ratings and rod power are loosely connected, but it is all subjective. Generally the sweet spot falls near the middle of the manufacturers lure weight rating but only experimenting will tell for sure.

I throw my topwaters (and jerkbaits) on a 6'6" M power, fast action rod rated for 1/4 to 5/8, and 10-17 lb line (St Croix Mojo), works great with what I use.
