Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 I hit a new spot today and the water was a little deeper than the majority of the spots I fish so I was finally able to try out my Scatter Rap Crank. The problem is that I don't seem to be getting the evasive action that was advertised. I cast out and then it seems like its just retrieving strait back then when it gets about 5 feet from the bank, the evasive action kicks in but by the time its that close, its more of less pointless. I was using 12 pound line. I'm thinking that may be the problem. Anyone else have a similar issue? Quote
aqualkinbush Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 You need to be using a variable reel speed. reel slow then give it a couple fast turns etc... and swap it up. The erratic reeling is what really makes it do it's magic. Be careful with the cranks though they will spin out if reeled too quickly. The shad and minnow are better IMO. Caught the fattie in my profile pic on the Scatter Rap Minnow. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 10, 2013 Global Moderator Posted June 10, 2013 With mine all I have to do is reel faster and it starts to dart around. There is a fine line between the right speed and too fast when it starts to spin out. I use a E5 Curado and have no problem getting the action out of it. You'll know when you're reeling the right speed, it will look like this 1 Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted June 10, 2013 Author Super User Posted June 10, 2013 Thanks guys...I'll try both suggestions. Hopefully it fixes the problem. I really like the idea of the Scatter Rap and it would be a shame if I couldn't get it going right. Quote
Primus Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I'm not claiming to be an expert on this bait nor do I have a lot time in at this point. That said I've thrown it twice, the first time on a M cranking rod with 12 lb floro and the second time with a spinning with 6lb Yozuri Hybrid. The bait looked much better in the water on the light line combo. My first fish was with the shad rap scatter bait and it was a nice Crappie. I do agree with the observation that a slow retrieve is best. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I work mine sort of like a jerk bait. Different retrieve speeds and pulling the rod tip. I use 20# power Pro braid. It only goes 4-6' down. Been killin every species on it. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted June 10, 2013 Super User Posted June 10, 2013 Mine is excellent at evading. Haven't caught a fish yet. Hootie 2 Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Maybe the bait wasn't in the "HUNTING MODE ""' HMMM Quote
