I live in Jacksonville FL and I was fishing a canal. There were 2 gators 5 gar that we saw and bass, big bass, jumping clear out the water!

I have never seen anything like this it happened 5 times in a hour. The first one we saw jumped about no exaggeration I am under estimating 4 feet out the water, and had a belly on it so it wasn't a small one. The last one we saw was huge I'm talking over 4 LB and got out about 2 feet above the water.

If I had a go pro this footage would have been amazing to see. The huge one jumped directly in front of me it was amazing.

I've seen fish on national geographic do that but never largemouths.

Anyone else ever seen anything like this? It amazed me that fish that size could clear out of the water like that.

Ive never seen em that big jump completely out but i have seen smaller bass do it. Seems pretty regular for smaller bass

Yea I figured smaller ones do but to see something that big get out of the water so high was remarkable. It reminded me of that show Air Jaws during shark week where they have footage of great white sharks jumping out the water

I've watched 'em jumping at just about dark the last couple of weeks on the smaller ponds I've been fishing and believe they are feeding on those white moths that skitter around on the surface. Those bass are leaping to catch the ones that hover a foot or more above the surface. I've seen 'em jump to catch swarms of mosquitos too. I've caught bass using my moth and mosquito flies, real simple imitations. Have seen a bunch of those three pounders taking advantage of the insect activity. Check the surface area for small flying insects in those canals next time. If under overhanging trees they'll feed on other assorted insects. Try a small light colored. belly Pop'r next time you see 'em jumping. Good luck. Those surface feeders can be as selective as trout sometimes....

Up on a Wisconsin river, I've had sturgeon that were 6 feet long jump all the way out of the water just a few feet from me. Scared the crap out of me

I wish I had video of these big bass jumping out the water. The height they got and the size of them was unbelievable still blows my mind several hours later!

I once saw an 18 lb'er do a straight verticle jump, so that its tail clear the water by its full body length.... 29"... then it did it again ! .....then a long jump, of several feet...

Then I landed it ;) LOL

Peace,

Fish

The last 5lb smallmouth I landed jumped close to twice it's length (20") out of the water trying to spit my crankbait. 4 pounders don't have any problem clearing the water but I've never seen one do it just to jump. I've seen big bass beach themselves chasing shad and bluegills though.

I have seen small bass jump while going after bugs flying over the water, but never one that big.

Well you did say there were gators, maybe they were fleeing.

That is what I was thinking either that or tey were feeding on bugs that were on the surface or flying over the water

The worst feeling is when a fish breaks your line then jumps next to you to spit out the lure. The feeling of picking your torpedo out of the water with the line snapped and the fish gone is a terrible one.

Last month during the spawn I saw about a 5-6lb bass jump straight out of the water. It was weird because I didn't see any shad and you would think they would be close to the beds. It was a good ways from any cover.

Yup, they must of been chasing schools of bait. Happens all the time this time of year. Use a prop bait, popping or walk the dog style baits. I always say bass jumping clear out the water like that, remind me of Great White sharks chasing seals. Awesome!

I think they were chasing dragon flies I'm talking full out breach of the water feet above the water. To paint a picture if you have eer had a bass jump as your are reeling it in think of te highest you have ever seen and double it! I'm talking a good 3 feet minimum from their tail to the water and these were HUGE fish.

I am going back there this weekend I am going to see if I can get any footage, suck that it will be using my iPhone

Thats what the one I was talking about did. It could have been dragonflys, or something else.

That would be fun to see.  Like others have said, ive only seen smallish bass jump.  I have had big pike/muskie get some serious hight while fishing topwater though.

I went to the canal but could not seem to get them to bite on anything not even too water. And they were still jumping out the water left and right, I have no idea what to use nothing has been working

I haven't seen a big bass do it either, of course here in Ontario 3lb bass is considered pretty big.  So I don't get to see monsters jump too much, the biggest jump I've seen was a bass that was probably around 2lbs try to take my frog.  Instead he totally "missed" and cleared right over it, had to be about 2 feet max, of course he had shoot out from heavy cover too, so it did have obstacles to get through.  So I'm sure they all can jump high when they want to, when they aren't lazy.  lol
