pbrussell Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I don't want to hear about drum and heartbreak. I hooked into a 8+ pound drum out at garnett cedar valley that made an incredible run (straight down). She fought like a giant bass... Thought I had me a new pb. Quote

I hooked into a 8+ pound drum out at garnett cedar valley that made an incredible run (straight down). She fought like a giant bass... Thought I had me a new pb. Same thing happened to me out there, twice. Both of them ate chatterbaits. First one it was still dark out and it never rolled like they usually do. Plus it ate it out over deep water after I'd pretty much given up on the retrieve. I've never seen a drum choke a moving bait like that. Really thought I had ahold of something for a minute instead of the stinky, croaking mess I ended up with. Quote

Mine was adjacent to a drop and raced straight into deeper water after being hooked. I can't stand those things... Quote
Doc-Drew Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Here's a thought, maybe we should include a "biggest junk fish" category for anything besides bass. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 2, 2013 Author Global Moderator Posted July 2, 2013 Here's a thought, maybe we should include a "biggest junk fish" category for anything besides bass. I've had "other fish" categories the last couple times and either very few catch anything other than bass (highly unlikely at Melvern) or nobody really cares to submit them. Heck I've caught a couple sunfish at Wabaunsee I almost took pictures of they were so big. I've caught walleye/saugeye the last 2 trips, catfish and drum happen a lot, and I haven't made a trip out there without catching a crappie yet. Quote
sizzlefry Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 ok just a thought here. if you go to the general topic discussion and look up the challenge to all fisherman section there a guy raising money to put a fishing combos in the hands of kids in need. now to the point. I would like to see if anyone during our turny would be interested in donating ( I think its 10$ for a combo rod and real) or even better an entry fee of 10 dollars a person ALL proceeds go to a charity of our choice. first we come up with charities we have in mind then vote on 1 that we would like to help. just a thought let me know what you think my feelings wont be hurt but im really in to helping out our fishing community or others in need. we also can donate to a different charity of our choice each turny also just an idea. I like this idea and am all for it but just remember, the lake is 2 hours away and there are boat and fishing fees so this might deter people even more. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 If you would like, everyone could clean out old tackle they dont use anymore and donate to Heros on the Water. Organization that puts wounded war veterans in kayaks fishing at events. Quote

Wachati Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Peter is three for three, I say we rename it from a tournament to fishing with Peter BTW, this is a new lake that me or Peter have never fished yet. You just made my day Curt!!! I am excited to go to wabaunsee this weekend. I am definitely going to be tying some new jigs tonight and I'll make some extra ones for you. I think that the winner of this tourney will be bringing in a 18-19 lb sack if the conditions are right. Quote
kanasbassfisher08 Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 im thinking between 20 to 23 lbs even a 25 if they have a solid kicker. this lake can produce that for sure Quote
basshunter0731 Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Gambrel and I will be there on Oct. 5 Quote

I would have had 18-20 pretty easily by myself. If it was a team tournament it would have been in the low 20's for sure. Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted July 22, 2013 Super User Posted July 22, 2013 I guess I need to get around to fishing this lake...I think everyone needs to go to this lake! Me and Peter went last Sunday. We caught fish steadily all day, once we got past that nazi bi$$h at the gatehouse. Btw she will spray your boat/carpet down with bleach water before you launch. If we have 10 boats it will take forever to get everyone on the water. Back to the fishing. We got lots of fish and caught them pretty much every ware around the lake from 1' to 17'. If it was rocky we were catching smallies including our/peters big fish of the day a 18" smallie that went just under 3# Other than that we caught a bunch of dinks! It was bad enough at one point I thought I caught a decent fish so I measured it and it was only 15" :-/ No doubt the lake has big fish but they flat out outsmarted us :-( 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 10, 2013 Author Global Moderator Posted August 10, 2013 Fished Wabaunsee Thursday in the rain. We had 2 boats out there so we started with Jon and Jared in Jared's boat and Jon's son and I in my boat. Christopher and I were on fish right out the gate and really never slowed down much. For some reason a large number of them were smaller smallmouths but when we caught a largemouth it was 15-19 inches. Jon and Jared was a different story, they struggled pretty bad all day. I think a really big key was to slow way down and really fish slow. They were also on a very specific location on each dock and it was the same spot on each dock. Once we figured that out it was pretty easy but couldn't find any big ones for some reason. Christopher lost a largemouth and smallmouth over 3 on back to back cast on the same dock on a hula grub. I got busted off by a big fish on the same dock, never saw her but she pretty much beat me from start to finish. I was doing best on a finesse jig and Christopher never really put the hula grub down once he figured out how to fish it. Once we switched I had Jared in my boat who had yet to catch a fish at 11am. I gave him a hula grub and told him not to let it lose contact with the bottom the whole way in. The few times he actually fished it that slow he caught fish, probably ended up with 10-12 for the day and started to catch them pretty good on a tube off the dam. Jon started to do better once he saw how slow Christopher was fishing. Jon fished a Slammer a lot and caught a couple, we were right by him when he caught the first one. My biggest of the day (that I weighed) was a 3lb 3oz smallmouth on a finesse jig in about 17' of water. Most the largemouth I caught were about the same size as this smallie was, just not as exciting. Lots of really big carp cruising around for some reason. There's at least one less than there was 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 17, 2013 Author Global Moderator Posted August 17, 2013 Cbass and I fished Wabaunsee Thursday. Never really caught them fast but it was very steady all day and the quality was pretty good. He lost a nice smallmouth right out of the gate and then I went on a tear. I put 3 keeper largemouth in the boat off 2 docks. First was a 4lb 4oz, next cast a 3lb 12oz, then a couple casts later a 3lb 11oz, all on one of my home made finesse jigs. We missed a couple good bites and I sight fished one on a frog under a dock (really cool to watch). Then we had a little lull in the action with just a couple dinks here and there. Ryan got a nice smallmouth on a jig. then another lull of nothing but dinks. Right around noon we ran back over to the boathouse to eat lunch and while I was still eating Ryan made a couple casts off the dock. I was watching when he set the hook on a really solid looking fish that I assumed was a drum until I heard him calling for the net. Turned out to be his new PB smallmouth at 19" and 3lbs 14ozs. Back out in the boat we fished across the dam and didn't get much other than one skinny 17" largemouth. Ryan picked up another nice smallmouth on a rock bank I switched to a big worm looking for our last keeper bite and was about to give up on it until a big fish ate it off my rod tip when I was reeling in. 4 lbs 11ozs was our big fish of the day. Right before we left I finally got in on the smallmouth action with a bright red eyed 2 1/2 pounder. Our best 5 were 20 1/4 pounds and all but the biggest one were on jigs. Quote
Wachati Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Hit wabaunsee of Friday. Fished a jig pretty much all day. Caught my 3 biggest fish in about a 40 minute window in the morning, then just some steady dink fishing throughout the day. But the dinks at that lake are nothing like Melvern dinks lol. I can't stand loading pics on this site but the smallie was 20" but looked to be on the weight watchers diet. It was lighter than the 18" I caught at Melvern and fought like a largemouth, didn't have much fight in him. The two largemouth were decent. My scale fell while weighing my first fish and the back flew off and battery went into the water. The first fish was 3.7, and I would guess that my second LM was 4.0-4.5. All of my keeper fish were caught in different areas but there was one common factor, which I am not at liberty to say <insert:evil laugh> due to our up and coming, "Battle on The Bunsee". Going to hit Pomona in the morning with my nephew and take a break from tubing. I'm pretty sure I will have nothing to report on that. Quote
