So I picked up some jitterbugs today in 3 different sizes.  First thing out of the package I notice the hooks seem to be junk.  What brand and size hooks do you guys recommend to replace them with for these size jitterbugs:

1/4 oz., 2" ________

3/8 oz., 2-1/2" ________

5/8 oz., 3" _______

Thanks.

I use #4 hooks for the 5/8 oz and used #6 when I used the 3/8 oz. Currently I use Gamakatsus, but that's because they're readily available where I shop. In the past I've used other brands, such as Owner, VMC and Eagle Claw.

Anything with a point will be an improvement over the hooks that come with the lures.

Thanks, I'll go pick up some tomorrow.  How do you recommend getting the old ones off, just cut them off?

I like to replace them with VMC hooks!

For a lure that's been around as long as, and is as popular as,

a Jitterbug, they sure use garbage hooks.  Add 25 cents to the price of the lure and put decent hooks on the thing.

Be sure not to unscrew the hook hangers, cut the old hooks off.

Cut the hooks, add a split ring and do not unscrew the hook hangers, add a drop of Super Glue to the screws.

While a couple of people said don't unscrew the hook hangers, I'll add that I prefer to discard the hangers and install screw eyes to attach the split rings to.

Thanks for the info fellas.  I did end up unscrewing the hook hangers on 2 of them.  What's the bad thing about unscrewing them?  Should I take the screws back out and put super glue on them before putting them back in?  Thanks again.

The only reason they say not to unscrew the hook hangers is because those tiny screws are easily lost and can strip out the holes. Put some lock-tite or super glue on the screws when you replace them and they will be fine.
