thechief13 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Just made the switch to braided line on one of my baitcasters and just wondering about leaders mostly, what baits do I need leaders on and don't i need them on and how to put a 12 pound flouro leader to a 50 pound power pro I've tried multiple knots and the flouro just slides out but yeag I'm new to braid so I need some tips thank you Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 8, 2013 Super User Posted June 8, 2013 Leaders are preference only. You don't have to use one, i only use it around rock or heavy timber. But try the Alberto knot. Very strong and will pass through guides nicely if tied correct. Quote
hooah212002 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 I use the alberto as well. Took me some time to get right, but now I can tie it quick and small and i am horrible at knots. 1 Quote
thechief13 Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Okay knot is settled but I really want to know what lures are best to use a leader on Quote
johnD. Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Okay knot is settled but I really want to know what lures are best to use a leader on The only time I use leader with braid in freshwater is in real clear water..imo no particular lure calls for it. maybe the drop shot guys use it idk ,that's not a technique I use in the shallow lakes of FL. 29JMP29 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 a lot of the lakes in northern wisconsin that i fish are really clear and i have been using straight 50 lb braid and the fish still bite Quote
hooah212002 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Typically you would use it for treble hook lures, clear water or when fishing stuff that will tear up braid (mussels. rocks). For example: I learned the hard way that mono is better than braid for fishing a spook because braid gets tangled up really bad when you pop it due to how limp braid is. I imagine jerkbaits would have the same problem. Also, a lot of people don't like fussing with fluoro because it has some memory, whereas braid has virtually zero. If you want the benefit of workability with braid, but the invisibility of fluoro, use a leader. I don't have a million rigs like a lot of people here, so I have one BC that is straight braid for jigs, heavy T-rigs or frogs, one that is straight fluoro for crankbaits and the like, and a third that has Yo-Zuri for everything else. My spinning rod has braided mainline with a fluoro leader because the lakes I fish are clear and when I use spinning gear, it is finesse-ish. Plus, braid is a pain in the butt to cut off and re-tie when you swap lures. Quote
thechief13 Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Okay cool my lake is pretty stained so ill keep it straight braid I just haven't been catching anything since I put it on but it has been a year since I've been to the summer house idk I'm gunna go out right now Quote
livetofish28 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 I fish braid on all of my rods with the exception of one. I use leaders on slow moving baits like jigs and t-rigged plastics and whenever cover is extremely nasty. You really don't need a leader for moving baits the fish don't really see the line they see the lure instead. That's just my .2 cents. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 9, 2013 Super User Posted June 9, 2013 Not being a fish myself I don't know exactly what they see, but I always use a leader if for no other reason than getting line tangled in a treble hook, and it happens. I'm a braid man and I use swivels, an improved clinch does not slip. I do use the alberto in lieu of a swivel only when I'm targeting species that will strike the swivel as readily as the lure, like a spanish or cero mackerel. Quite often I will use a duolock, saves on both leader and mainline plus it can help a wee bit in preventing a cut off from a toothy fish. Quote
Super User Grizzn N Bassin Posted June 9, 2013 Super User Posted June 9, 2013 If its stained straight braid man... I only use braid for frogging Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted June 9, 2013 Super User Posted June 9, 2013 use braidd for everything.leaders are not needed.fished next to straight flouro users and did as well as they did if not better.it's all about putting your lure in front of a biting fish. Quote
