JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Just to start, 2/3 of my winches have had problems now. I'm fishing as we speak, I cast out just like every other time - But this time I hear a SKREEEECH/Grinding came from the left side of my spool. I quickly reel in and nothing feels wrong. I go to cast out again, this time instead of just hearing the nice zzzzzzzzz when you cast out, its combined with an almost wooshing sound. Did I blow my spool bearing? Weird thing is, I gained like 10 more feet casting distance. Still using the reel and nothing seems wrong except that wooshing I'm getting when I cast out now. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Could be the brake race is dirty and dry. Clean it with a q tip and alcohol and put a small dot of oil on a other and lightly coat the race. Should take care of it if thats the issue. Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Just opened her up, nothing, its a lefty btw. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 You won't really be able to see the dirt. But a q tip with alcohol will show you. Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Its coming from the gear box side of the reel. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Ohhhhhh. Not sure WTH that could be. Sorry, Maybe the tension disc on that side is dry? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 8, 2013 Super User Posted June 8, 2013 Its coming from the gear box side of the reel. Interesting, almost nothing is moving in that side of the reel during the cast. Because the Revo Winch uses a single piece spool shaft it does pass through the pinion, and into the bearing under the tension cap, the spool shaft also rubs on the disks in the end of the tension cap. Might try removing the spool and wiping the shaft down with a clean towel, I would also remove the tension cap and give it a good look over. Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Just got home, gonna gut her and give her a detailed cleaning and lubing - More to follow. Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 On the spool shaft itself there is a bearing, but there is a small bar that goes through it. I cant figure out how to remove it to get the bearing off, any ideas? Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 That requires a special tool. Don't mess with that pin unless u have it. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 8, 2013 Super User Posted June 8, 2013 All my revos did this. The bearing on the spool shaft does need a special tool or you can damage it. That little pin sits inside the smaller brass gear, so be carefull. It's tapered on one side. All of my Revos made this annoying sound. I finally traced it down to dry bearings. They all required more than the recommended amount of oil. I had to use triple the amount. Put 2-3 drops on the bearings and cast it again. Make sure to hit all 3 bearings. The reason your hearing that sound on the gear box side is because of the bearing the spool shaft fits into. Lube it the same as well. Everyone says just one drop, and that works for most reels, but I had a total of 6 different gen 3 revos and everyone required it. I had to lube them like that about every 2-3 outings. Hince why I dumped everyone I had. 1 Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Ya, I'm honestly thinking about dumping these and switching to Daiwa, thanks for the lube advice, gonna try that now - I cleaned her all up yesterday but only added one drop and ya nothing changed. Quote

Can't really comment on the Daiwa's as I have never held one, but I went to all Shimano and am really happy so far. I've got 2 Chronarchs and 2 Curado's and will be adding more soon. All 4 just need 1-2 drops and they are very quiet. I have noticed with heavy lures, my 50E makes a little zing if not lubed up good. Try 1 drop at a time until it starts to quiet down. When it becomes quiet note how much it took. You will want to use the least amount you need to as to not hinder your distance. The less the better. Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 I noticed that I gained about 10 feet casting distance, would that be a result of no lube on the bearing restricting the bb's from moving? Quote

Weird thing is, I gained like 10 more feet casting distance. Still using the reel and nothing seems wrong except that wooshing I'm getting when I cast out now. This is my best guess as to what happened but of course I was not there. When you pressed the thumb lever to disengage the spool you did not get it completely depressed, the screeching you heard was the pinon gear bouncing and rubbing against the pin in the spool shaft until the spool slowed enough for the pinion to re engage. I have never seen a bearing "blow out" on any reel. I have never seen a bearing on a reel go from being fine 1 cast to screeching loudly on the next, and if that did happen to be the cause of the noise you most certainly would not have gained in casting distance. I think it is a safe bet that your bearings are fine. Most of time when someone complains of a whooshing noise, I ask them to take a look at the line on their spool, sometimes a small lose loop of line will be there and it will rub the frame during the cast and you will hear the noise you are describing. As I mentioned I was not there and have not seen the reel, this is just my thoughts on the information that you have posted. Hope you get it figured out or a reel that makes you happy, If you decide to get rid of the Winch let me know, I use them in my fishing and find them to be a very good reel. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 8, 2013 Super User Posted June 8, 2013 I noticed that I gained about 10 feet casting distance, would that be a result of no lube on the bearing restricting the bb's from moving? If you put a drop of oil in there they will be lubed some. But yes the less oil in there, the less restriction for the bearings hince the increased distance. On a completely dry bearing, I can get it to spin for 20-30 seconds. It's noisy as all get out, but free spinning. Quote

I think that's what exactly happened, I feel like a fool now lol - I went outside and did that and it had the exact same noise from last night. Quote
JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 So I just re oiled the bearings, 2 times still getting that wooshing, 3 times its still happening. The best way I can explain it is you know the "zzzzzzzz" sound you get when you cast, instead of that now its almost like a dampened "zzzzz" Quote

It took sometimes 5 good drops of oil on all 3 bearings to quiet them down for me. Work the oil into the bearings. I had to put oil on both sides and spin them to work it down in there. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted June 8, 2013 Super User Posted June 8, 2013 If the winch was like my STX was, the spool shaft bearing was an open bearing. It took a ton more lol on it to quiet it down Quote

JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Still nothing with copious amounts of oil, but like Aavery said the original sound was from me not engaging the thumb bar all the way, but the dampened "zzzz" from the reel started happening on the cast after the one where I didn't engage the thumb bar. JeziHogg Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 So I took the side plate bearing, Tension cap bearing and took the whole spool from one of my other winches and switched them into this one I'm having problems with, still no change Quote
