Florida Bragging Rights, Take 2, June 7Th-30Th

Im still striking out. I lost one of my northstar jigs to a rock. I then lost 2 fish on a wacky rigged senko, tried some new hooks, might me my fault how I set the hook. 

 

I only fished for an hour under a shady area. This is my longest slup of my career. I may have to take up catfishing or move over to salt for a while. Between having a cold, some of my lakes turning to poo and it being so hot out I may need to find a new past time like making tackle vids on youtube.

 

 

Diggy, you are not the only one. I have struck  out for the last three days. I have thrown everything at them. I just came in after fishing a couple hours around canals in my neighborhood and I swear to God I saw tumbleweed. It was a virtual ghost town. The only highlight of the last three days is I caught a pretty nice mayan cichlid on a swim bait. My fishing elbow has flared up a bit but I just can't quit knowing that bragging rights are at stake. But you know what? I think fishing is done for a while until this heat settles, which will not be for months.

 

 

 

Strange guys... I've been catching them left and right in Coral Springs last couple of days (I'm on a stay at home vacation till the end of the month since my mom is visiting from Poland so I'm fishing every day) except they are ALL dinks!!! Well, there were a few that were maybe 2+lbs and 17-18 inches but nothing worth bringing here given fstr385's current counts :-(

 

Also, today I went to a new spot in Coral Springs, and found this system of few canals that was loaded with bass! Must have pulled 15 in 2 hours, and then I found this tiny off shoot canal that way maybe 75 yards and very shallow... can you say Snakehead Lair!!!!!!! I hooked 2 in 2 casts! And then walked further into the canal (a dead end canal) and in a very shallow water I saw 5 or 6 more, problem was they spooked when they saw me. But hey, at least I have a guaranteed-to-catch-a-snakehead-spot if I ever feel down and lonely ;-)

 

BTW, I hear that post spawn you'll be mostly catching small bass, is this the case now in S. FL.? All I've been getting lately are small bass.

Bass fishing hasn't been very good around here either, I'm just going once in while to get out for an hour. The fish have been small, with the only 1 thin 18" bass that was 2 lbs or so.  Saltwater has been the poorest I have ever seen it too, it's a matter of location and tide.  The baitfish have not shown up as it normally does, the old saying holds true.......no bait, no fish. I did have a 3 day stretch without a strike because I was trying some different spots and with the incoming tide been tossing pretty much for barracuda, had my smallest of the year only 35".  On the bright side I caught my first snook of the year off the beach yesterday morning, catching them (tarpon too) on the outgoing at the inlets has been good but 20# and less, the big girls arrive in late August.  Fishing the tide, production is directly related to the change of tide in relationship to sunrise or sunset.

You guys need to come to Jacksonville then I keep seeing posts about how slow fishing has been. For me it just slowed down this week. I have been hitting my regular big fish spots and haven't been catching anything at all.

I am not going to be able to go out a lot over the next week we are taking our son to Disney for his first birthday for a couple days.

So my total will probably stay at 5 fish 104"

I tried fishing today and it was god awful again. I think the fish in the local lake left when they drained it. I may try a few spots in wellington this week or just go to where my father lives. If I cant catch a fish in there Ill retire fully.

I was sorta slow for a little bit then started to figure them out in the past week. Went to my secret spot this morning, but it rained on me most of the time, then cleared up as soon as I was packed up of course. If work doesn't screw me, I plan on pulling in some good fish by next Friday.

Went out today after my doctor appointment to my spot at the golf course and I was killing them for a solid hour and a half. I pulled in 8 nothing too big biggest was 17.5" missed about another 4 or so, and moby dick came within 5 feet of my grasp!! Easily would have beaten my PB in my avatar. I was furious I was using a swim jig and idk what happened I don't think I hooked it and it just had its mouth closed the whole time cuz it just opened up and spit out my jig right in front of me after putting up a hell of a fight.

I am going out tonight and tomorrow early morning to see if I can hook into it again.

Only thing I can say is mine has been performing flawless for over a year used about 20 times a month with many fish caught.

So where did everyone finish this month?? I know I am done for June and some of July. All I know is I had fun trying to make something happen. I wanted to do a Miami Heat Game 6 comeback however it didn't happen. Congratulations to whomever the winner is. Fishing has been tough.

Yesterday was ok, I started off with a tarpon, then 2 snook and then window closed as fast as it opened.  Once daylight hit the area was void of any fish.

About noon I do some pond fishing, hottest bite I've seen in a while, fish were very small but catching them on a light action rod was fun, that window shut down pretty quick too, lasted only about 30 minutes.

Anybody in Jacksonville needs to go to Gander Mountain and pick up some x Factor baits they are $1.97. I went fishing with bass czar and he put me on them. I can see These things being my new go to they only make 5" though, I'm trying to find something similar but bigger. I went out at 730p til night and was slaying them nothing big though but numbers.

Yea I've noticed that when I see people post pics of fish either in this section or others, and I look at their location and it's FL I'm like their fish make the fish we post look like guppies! And a majority of these guys have boats so they are at a huge advantage. I only see a handful of people such as OrlandoFisherman who are bank fishermen and get nice fish. Idk if BocaBasser is a boater but I have made respect for bank fishermen because I know the feeling of "man I wish i had a boat!"

I'm telling you guys, if I had been taking pics yesterday and had my measuring tape I would have won this tournament!!! I figured out where the bass are hiding in my honey hole canal near my house!!! That's right, i started fishing yesterday with a lizard and was casting along the banks and only catching small fry. Then as I cast across the canal and bring the bait in, a mosquito bit me, and I stopped my retrieve midway through the canal to deal with the little blood sucker. 10 seconds later I see my line run off to the side! Set the hook, and bam! I land a 5 pounder!!! I then realized they're hiding in deeper water and want a slow moving bottom bait. Over the next hour, I pulled 5-6 fish that were HUGE! The last one was pushing 10 lbs I believe! What happened was he got gut hooked, and during the hook removal surgery I also jabbed him in the gills! He was bleeding and out of the water for 2-3 minutes, and I wanted to return him back as soon as possible and in the heat of the moment decided not to take a pic and risk killing him. I'm telling you he was so large, that as I was finally removing the hook (after cutting the line and running the hook through rather than out) my left hand was holding it's jaw, and my left hand was inside it's mouth about an inch past my wrist! That thing was SOOOOO HUGE!!!!!!! I have never seen bass this big in my life; it was bigger than the 7 pounder I watched my friend pull out few days ago!!! I really wish I had a pic and could share it, but I decided that it wasn't worth killing him. Plus now I know where they are (the big ones) and how to get to them! It was great, I would let my lizard drop off to the bottom and then hop it slowly across the canal, and every few casts I would hook a monster. I swear there wasn't a single one under 5lbs! I'm so pumped now, I went out during lunch to walmart and picked up some 1/2oz and 1/4oz jigs, and will use them with crawfish and other trailers that I already have and see if I can pull this monster in again!

Man that sounds amazing! And not taking a pic for the benefit of the fish was a good idea.  If they decide to do another tournament PLEASE make sure you take your camera, I want to see these monsters.  I have been fishing this canal in Ponte Vedra from time to time but I can't seem to get a single bite.
