Debating on buying this app for my phone or should I just get a regular map from a local store, the advantages I see to the app is obviously it is not limited to just one body of water. Also the Navionics app has an HD ( High Definition - for those who may not know ) version. Has anyone used the app to give some feedback and if anyone has used the HD version is it worth the extra money over the regular version? Thanks for any input.

I have the Navionics app on my iPhone and use it regularly. It's great for on the water navigation and marking points on the lake and off the water it's great for examining the whole body of water for those coves and holes you may have never noticed. I've used it several times navigating through dense fog where I could only see maybe 10-15 feet in front of the boat and I feel it is worth the price just for this. It has great depth contours and is pretty accurate...as long as the lake is at the same level as it was when it was charted. That's the only downfall. Last I heard they were working on a depth compensation feature which would put this app over the top. It's already great and I use it almost every time I hit the water but depth comp would put it over the top. I've not used the HD version but I can definitely recommend the standard version.

Why not both? Paper maps are an invaluable tool even with the advent of electronics.

Both is double the money, I may eventually get both but right now I am looking for one or the other and the area I live to get maps that cover all the lakes in this area would be a nice chunk of change and I fish pretty much all of them because each place is at max a 45 min drive from where I live.

The app for the smart phone is the way to go.  I have it for my iPhone and iPad.  The level of detail is great.  Worth the $10 in my opinion.

Dude. Duuuuuude. Would you rather break out a big ol' paper map and GUESS where you are or have a GPS enabled device that tells you EXACTLY where you are, how fast you're going, where you've been, where the spots you caught fish are at and have every map in the US at your disposal in the palm of your hand?

Thought so.

In case you're still confused, get the app. You'll be happy you did. Oh and FYI, the updates are free!

+1 Menace

The only reason for a paper map for me is a dead iPhone battery...but there's solutions for that as well

FWIW I have Navionics and it is one of the best purchase I have ever made.   That said, it went  out on me for about two weeks one time for no known reason.  Then one day, I tried it and it worked again.

I have the Navionics App on my phone and I liked it.  Lately it seems like it works sometimes and sometimes not...not sure if it's my phone or the app.  Also, I would say it depends on where you fish.  I live in SE Mississippi and fish the river and some smaller lakes and they don't have the contour lines, depth, etc. for those smaller lakes.  In fact, I downloaded Backwoods Navigator and use the USGS topo maps (the new style) on it and it works much better for me.  I would prefer Navionics if it had the data for the areas I fish but it doesn't.  They have a special on it right now.  You can get Navionics USA for $1.00.  I saw it this morning.  For $1.00 you might as well get it and see how you like it.  You can't beat that price!

Well, let me clarify that...they have it for $1.00 if you have Android.  The other versions are not.

Paper map? What's that? Kidding but seriously, the App is the only way to go. GPS, waypoint, 1000's of lakes, the list goes on.

Personally, I'd much rather know exactly where I was ta on the water then giving it my best guesstimate..

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up! I just downloaded it. You can't go wrong for $1 :D
