grid Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I bought my first spoon today. Johnson spoon gold in color. What's the best way to fish this lure? Tried it a little today. No luck. Switched to a silver with black specks spinnerbait and caught 6 bass withen 1 hour. Was using my med-light spinning pole and one snapped my rod in two. Quote

Avalonjohn44 Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I love this bait, and usually fish it without a trailer. It is one of those old standbys that alway work for me when nothing else will. I keep it next to my Mepps Fury #3 another last resort bait... Quote
brian_d Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 i usually use it with a grub tail. if you get a hit and miss the fish you can let it fall and it flutters down, then jig it and a fish will usually come back for it a second time. Quote
56 crestliner Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Are the hooks on these very dull? i bought a couple and some Uncle Josh Bass Stipes for them and i couldnt get the hook through the Pork. Quote

Personally, I wouldn't use it where a spinnerbait could be used. I'd use it in moderate to dense weeds, letting it fall into holes and at the edges. I think most people buy this for its weedlessness; might as well get what you pay for. Quote
CrazedL.IFisherman Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Im a huge fan of these lures, i havent used the gold colored ones yet, but will this season, in the past ive used the silver ones, what i do know is many people own them but rarely throw them for awhile i did that myself until i picked one up and had great success the entire day, they are optimal for running through sparse lily pads and produce atleast in my case some nice monsters, id also add a paca chunk jr, seeing those arms kick while having the spoon wiggle has caught me many bass and pickerel too, hope this helps- Jon Quote
BIG M Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Never used these for bass, but if you ever go after Redfish make sure you have a few gold colored spoons, they like them lots. I would fish them the same way as I do in the marsh grass, slow rollin along the tops of the weeds. Quote

Yeah, theyr'e kinda famous for that hook. It takes a little effort to get them sharp but I assume they use a strong hook because of their intended use - running them through weed cover. Ten minutes work will put a decent point on them. These lures are really fun to use in lily pads but don't tell anyone else, keep the secret to ourselves! Use one of these on a heavy action rod, a baitcaster reel and voila - Retro fishing from the '50's. Only thing missing is a rented wooden boat and a smoky 15 HP outboard. Yeah! Quote
Guest avid Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I've had several in my tackle box since the 70's. it's a great lure for grassy cover. tip it with anything that suits your fancy. the classic is a #11 uncle josh pork frog. definitly sharpen that hook. Quote
