Kyle Mahaffey Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 I am new to the kayak fishing and was wondering what the deal with the milk creat thing is for. How is it attached? And where does it go. I have one kayak friend but he is new as well and spent know either. Any help would be amazing. Quote
Kyle Mahaffey Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 Bugee cord to keep it in place but what is the purpose for the milk thing? Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 The milkcrate is used to hold whatever you want it to hold... tackle boxes, rods, other stuff. This video might be helpful: Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 6, 2013 Super User Posted June 6, 2013 Jsut a way to organize your tackle and potentially rods depending on how you have it set up. I don't fasten mine down to well other than the standard bungees in teh back of my boats that i just use to squeeze it. Now when on the river i will bungee it down a little better in case of turtling.... Quote
Jim Mac Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 I don't even use one because it's too hard for my old, stiff body to reach back for anything. I do use a PVC "rocket launcher" for my rods though. Quote
Kyle Mahaffey Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 Where do people find these milk creates? Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Most people have a quickie mart or local grocery store where if you ask one of the workers, they might give you one. My first was a gift from a fellow kayak angler, but the one I have for my son was one from a local gas station. I just asked the manager when I saw one sitting on the floor near the front door of the store. No charge at all. Quote
Kyle Mahaffey Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 Do you know anything about ocean kayak prowler big game angler kayak? Saw it at the local dealer today and I like the look of it. Are they any good. Wife declined the hobie because I'm new at kayaking and she doesn't want to spend a lot on it. Quote
martintheduck Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Milk crate is to hold planos and other random crap (bags of soft plastics mostly in my case). Attached a pvc rod holder to it as well, so I have a nice place to hold 3 rods (doesn't work too well when fishing trees though). I use a rubber bungee to strap it down to my yak. My yak has some little plastic loops to attach it to. No one here would just up and give me one... believe me... i asked. I ended seeing some by the dumpster of mini-mart and grabbed one. Quote

Our resident BR moderator JFrancho had one that he sold to another BR member. He can give you firsthand knowledge of its pros/cons and its best use. Quote

Jim Mac Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 You can buy them at Office Max any time of the year, but Walmart, Target, etc. only have them at back to school time. Quote

No, a rip off is what you did by stealing the crate.... Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted June 8, 2013 Super User Posted June 8, 2013 psssh.... they were with the garbage.... Actually a lot of places set them outside for the various companies to pick them back up after delivery since the retailer gets charged for missing crates. Quote
Jim Mac Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 I guess he can't afford the $4 at Office Max. 1 Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 FWIW, the crates are the property of the bottler, in most cases. They expect to get them back from the vendors who buy their milk and lose quite a bit of money each year on 'shrink' from lost/stolen crates. Take this from someone who's worked on a VT dairy farm. Store managers sometimes *do* give them away, but they shouldn't - since they aren't really the store's property either. So, if you're looking to get a crate, pay a couple bucks and buy one. But, if you have one that came through another channel, it's not a capital crime. Quote
Brackish Angler 228 Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Just an FYI if you plan on getting a milk crate. The sides of a milk crate are 13" in width. Meaning most 3-rod holders (12" to 12.5") easily zip tie to the side. A good idea if you want to save some money by not buying an "Angler" kayak. Also, a crate will fit 6 3600 (clips up) and 3700 (vertical) series Plano boxes perfectly. Another good mod is some sort of multi tool on a zip lanyard or coiled lanyard attached to the crate. There are too many more crate mods for me to get into, though. Also take a look at the Tarpon 120. I love mine. (You can get away with a 100 imo if you kayak mostly moving water but you sacrifice storage and tracking) One last thing. If you refuse to sit and fish, be prepared to spend a lot of money or give up. Most of your average SOT kayaks are pretty difficult or impossible to stand on. Quote
