Super User slonezp Posted June 6, 2013 Super User Posted June 6, 2013 Went out meat fishing with my dad today. He hadn't seen the new boat yet and has been bugging me to get out. When my son comes along, dad doesn't get to fish the way he wants because the kid has bass blinders on. He won't fish for anything else. I met him at my favorite panfish lake. Dad supplies the bait and I supply the fun. Bet we caught 100 fish all shapes and sizes. Bass, perch, crappie, bluegill, rockbass, pumpkinseed, and a bowfin. The vast majority were small but we found a blg gill honeyhole. Gills all caught on nightcrawler pieces. Everything else caught on nightcrawlers, minnows and leeches. Yes, I did keep a couple 14" bass for the frying pan. 3 Quote
HLNichols Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Nice mess of fish! I always enjoy fishing for "just anything." It's less serious and more fun. Gills are a blast, especially when they're biting one after another! Looks like a good eat to me!!! Quote
derekxec Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 you cook the bluegill whole or try to filet it? Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted June 6, 2013 Super User Posted June 6, 2013 Got yourself a nice looking feast there! 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 6, 2013 Super User Posted June 6, 2013 Very Nice ~ Some Good Looking Sweet Meat right there - Just waiting for a Sharp Thin Blade and a Hot Fat Bath . . . . . So you never did say, how did your Dad like that fine new ride of yours ? A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 6, 2013 Author Super User Posted June 6, 2013 you cook the bluegill whole or try to filet it? 99.9% boneless fillets. Makes for easy frying. I like eating fried bluegill sandwiches. Very Nice ~ Some Good Looking Sweet Meat right there - Just waiting for a Sharp Thin Blade and a Hot Fat Bath . . . . . So you never did say, how did your Dad like that fine new ride of yours ? A-Jay He was impressed. Said it was much nicer than the old boat. The only negative comments he made was "Why do you need a motor that big?" and he thought the seat was uncomfortable. He bought me 2 minnow buckets as a boat warming gift and I believe a hint that he wants to go out more. I'm guilty of not taking him out enough. Only pre and post tourney season. He misses having a boat. Got rid of his over 10 years ago. He had a 24' Pro Line walk around all set up for trolling Lake Michigan. 1 Quote
derekxec Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 guess i need to try some bluegill lol are the big ones better or the small or it all tastes the same? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 6, 2013 Author Super User Posted June 6, 2013 Big ones are easier to filet. I wouldn't recommend keeping anything under 8" because there's not enough meat for a filet. Check your local restrictions. Some lakes here in IL have size and creel limits on panfish. Quote

Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted June 7, 2013 Super User Posted June 7, 2013 Me and the wife just went bluegill fishing for the first time today. We were slaying them left and right. Probably caught 50-75. It was like a fish every cast. Didn't keep any but it made me think of this thread. The majority of them were pretty small but we caught a few nice ones that would have been a decent eating size. Maybe next time I'll keep a couple. Do you do something special with your bluegill sandwiches or just bluegill, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 7, 2013 Author Super User Posted June 7, 2013 just bluegill, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise? On white bread. That's it 1 Quote

loodkop Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I wish it was safe to eat fish out of some of my local waters. Due to pollution catch and release is healthier than fresh fish. Not good. Quote
