I just got a shimano tekota for live lining but I'm thinking of returning it to get a shimano Baitrunner. Do you guys this the Baitrunner will serve me better?

based on what youve described in other threads, i would make the switch. okuma makes a popular bait runner too. or you could check out casting reels with bait clickers

either will work....the baitrunner will be a little easier to cast lighter baits though

I've owned the bait runner series since the late 90s. I'm 30 now and almost positive I bought the 6500 when I was a freshman in high school. Lol my 6500 us still going strong caught a ton of bluefish just last year on it live lining bunker.... I have no clue what species your going after but the reels are awesome. Let the fish run crank the reel and set the hook. If you use circle hooks don't set the hook just start reeling. Lol I've used okumas and had tons of problems years back and you also have to manually disengage the bait runner. On the shimano you do not have to. All you gotta do is reel. I have the newer D model and between me an my buddy we have a bunch of the originals and the B models. Old school ones had the better running drag but they are all still exceptional. Any specific questions don't hesitate to ask me.

Just got it today. What kind of line are you guys using on it? I have the 6000d I have 300 yards of power line 80lb but I think it's too thick to put on my reel.

I have 8000 BR I use 30 lb invisibraid for tarpon....if you are bass fishing or striper fishing 20 lb would work well.

Just reading the statistics on Shimano's web site the 6000d baitrunner holds 130 yds of 65# braid, IMO even that is obscene. I'd be using close to 300 yds of 20# or about 250 of 30# with a little bit of backing.  The Shimano BR is a proven winner, as long as that's what you bought no need in suggesting something else, you have a nice reel.  Casting is dependent on the rod the reel is mounted on.  I'm not a B/R user myself so I can't give a suggestion on the rod as it may be  used dual purpose, bait and lures. That said of the people I know that use them, the rods are nothing out of the ordinary, mh 10/20 and heavy 25 lb. My fishing partner uses another brand of baitrunner on a 40 lb rod (Penn Slammer rod), catches sheepshead, to snook to kingfish and sailfish, he mainly uses bait.

Were using: 6000D 15# spider ultimate mono, 8000D 20# Big Game, 6500(2) 17# Big Game and 20# hiviz Stren, 4500B 10# Trilene XT. I included my surf fishing buddies reels so you get the idea. I wouldn't use braid on bait runners had problems on older models from braid use. Say you have a 25# striper running you then crank to disengage bait runner, there's a instant power transfer to the bail then you set the hook. You need a little stretch. The braid is gonna be way to stiff. If you must use braid I'd say go way lighter on line rest. Like I said in other post if you use circle hooks on say a chunk of bunker your reel us setting the hook not the rod.

Also forgot to say congrats on joining the BR family :P

I spooled mine up with 40lb test power pro myself an had no issues. I think it took pretty much the entire 300 yard spool.

Thanks for the help guys looks like ill be returning this 80lb test to get some 20lb or 30lb line.

I have 130 yards of 30lb braid in my tackle box but that would be too little to put on my reel right? I would need more yards so it will cast the right way?

Fill it a little more than half way with cheap mono, then add your braid.
