Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 5, 2013 Super User Posted June 5, 2013 Took 3 reels to Florida last month. One was a used Trion 6.3:1 loaded with what looks like 20# PP. Picked up a 7' Medium Compre while there for the reel. ($50 out-of-pocket so I was thrilled. ) Line isn't the problem. Problem is free spool. All 6 brakes are out, yet that sucker over-runs something fierce. Had to increase spool tension in order to carefully cast without over-runs. Used it for my worm rod...a 10" unweighted worm on a 3/0 hook. Started with 4 brakes on with my Chronarch 101A and never bothered to change it. (First time I've had it out.) STX-L Gen 1 magnetic brake was set near max (7?...not numbered & I didn't count from off). Spool tension on both these reels is set to remove side-to-side play. I let er rip with these 2 reels regardless of wind conditions and whether or not I was throwing into the wind. I mention these reels to show that I don't think it was operator error with the Trion. Is it possible that something is wrong with the Trion? I originally had this reel on a MH, but thought maybe the rod wasn't loading properly with that light bait. Thus the trip to the Mom & Pop shop for the Compre. Guess I should have tied on a 3/8 or 1/2 oz. spinnerbait to see if that helped. I know light weights can cause me trouble, but this was the 3rd year I have been fishing unweighted worms in Florida using b/c reels only, altho the hooks were 5/0's before this year. Never had a problem throwing the worm on my STX-L and a Falcon Original 7' MH in the 2 previous years. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks. Quote
zell_pop1 Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Send it to DVT and let him take a look at it-I have a Trion that is a few years old and it casts fine with just two brakes on. Quote

May have to. Mike has done a few reels for me. Was kind of hoping to correct any problem myself on this reel. Didn't want to wind up spending as much for repairs and shipping as I paid for the reel. Becomes less of a good deal. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted June 7, 2013 Super User Posted June 7, 2013 trions have spring loaded shoes that come off faster than shimano shoes.you should still not be backlashing with all 6 on. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 8, 2013 Author Super User Posted June 8, 2013 Contact surface of drum is smooth. I didn't feel any oil on it. Did get a bit of black when I wiped it off, but pretty sure that came from the part of the drum below the contact surface. Double checked all 6 brakes to make sure they weren't locked and weren't binding. May have to let Mike look at it. Have a couple others he could clean at the same time. Still haven't gotten the nerve up to do more than pull a spool out of my b/c reels. Really need to learn how to perform routine maintenance myself as I can't afford to pay someone else that much money each year for cleaning. My b/c count is up around 25 now. That is a healthy chunk of change even with Mike's bassresource member discount. Quote
