snapshotmd Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 I've been using a 3/16 oz texas rig with mono and I keep on getting caught on the bottom. I am getting caught up what seems like every 3rd cast! What can I do to prevent this from happening? Quote
Redhed Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 not really that much you can do.. when the bottom is trashy like that i either slow down the retreive and "feel" your way over obsticles OR my favorite, go weightless. is it your hook getting caught or the weight itself? Quote
snapshotmd Posted June 14, 2010 Author Posted June 14, 2010 I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking it's the weight since I imbed the hook point. But it seems I've had this problem everytime I go out and in different situations. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted June 14, 2010 Super User Posted June 14, 2010 I much prefer a jighead to a loose bullet sinker. steve Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted June 14, 2010 Super User Posted June 14, 2010 try using a lighter weight and/or pegging it. Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 14, 2010 Super User Posted June 14, 2010 When I feel my weight is getting a bit tangled I simply apply pressure, then release, apply a tad more pressure, then release; if this doesn't work I apply pressure while shaking my rod tip. Once my weight breaks free I pause for a good 15-20 seconds cause before I can count to 20 I done got bit! Works the same with a Jig-N-Craw Quote
Pikesnogle Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 X2 on jighead, that might solve your problem. But I think the number one fix would be weightless like mentioned above, most senkos/plastics sink pretty well just takes a little more time than using a weight. However if it prevents multiple snags, I'd say it's worth a shot. Good Luck Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 15, 2010 Super User Posted June 15, 2010 I don't remember the maker, but I bought some lead bullet sinkers years ago, which I still use today. They had a long, slender nose, as opposed to being "bullet" shaped. Never could get them hung up in any kind of cover. Wish I could point you to a source, but I'm pretty sure I use to get them at WalMarts. I'll try to take a picture of one for you later today. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 15, 2010 Super User Posted June 15, 2010 Here's a photo of what I was talking about, as far as "long nose" bullet sinkers. Top is the one I really have had a lot of success with. Not sure what you call this design, but it's dramatically different from the one below it: Hope this is some help to you! Quote

bassin is addicting Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 i'd say go weightless. i fish from the bank 90% of the time and if i try to use any weight at all...i get hung up every 3rd or 4th cast like you are talking about. really nothing you can do. just let it sink and work it back. usually if you're fishing from the bank you aren't fishing very deep water anyway...if parallel to the bank. good luck Quote
Dave P Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Another option is to look into parasite weights. They work well fro me swimming through weeds and trash. Quote
GRiver Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 You could all so try a worm weight, a lead peg you slide into the worm. BPS has them.... http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_52877_100010003_100000000_100010000_100-10-3 Quote
