jbone177 Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I borrowed a kayak from my father to give fishing from one a try. I cant permanently modify it as its not mine. I was hoping someone could give me a couple of ideas for cheap and/or DIY temporary mods that will make fishing from it a bit easier, more enjoyable, etc. I dont even know what would really need to be done, but I figure a way of holding/securing two rods is called for and some way of securing or holding my tackle would be nice. Any other advise is welcome! It probably isnt going to need to be anything that will hold up for a really long time considering I plan on picking one up for myself soon if I like it. Thanks. Quote
Gavin Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Thats a pretty small sit in kayak...not much room for anything other than you...You might be able to bunjie a milk crate for your tackle behind the seat....and jam your rods under those front bunjies. Make sure you have a PFD...and a paddle leash....I'd look at a sit on top model if your going to buy one for yourself. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Grab some Velcro strips with adhesive back and a pencil pouch the kid kids use in there notebooks to keep pens and pencils in. Attach the pouch via the Velcro to the inside or outside if necessary to keep in use plastics and pliers In. It may be necessary to stitch the Velcro strip to the pouch as it does not adhere to fabric well. Also grab a couple of small carabiners, small pulleys and rope. You can use this to make an anchor trolley. An anchor is a great asset while kayak fishing. You attach the carabiners to the pulleys and the attach it to the front and back carrying straps. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about anchor trolleys. It's hard to tell if the bungees are held on by screw in brackets or holes but if you can untie the bungee then you will have a way to secure a crate to the kayak via rope. This will make it much more secure than bungees alone. All this is completely removable causing no damage to the kayak other than having reinstall the bungee. Quote
derekxec Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 they dont have a place to rent or buy fishing kayaks around you? if they do you could rent one for a couple hours it shouldnt be that expensive or ask if they will let you take one on a test drive that one doesnt look like you could do much and if you flip over lol im not sure how easy they are to escape or roll back over while you are still in it so please be careful Quote
jbone177 Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 I was thinking the same things when I picked it up. Its not gonna break my heart to not use it. I could at least take it out just cruising around and see if I just like kayaking to begin with. But I will certainly try to make something work. It seems pretty easy to escape if rolls. Quote
