FutureSoldier Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Ok so I have been using Buzzbait's for a while now, but when and where exactly should I throw them? Low light conditions, etc? Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted May 28, 2010 Super User Posted May 28, 2010 Tight to cover, over the grass, and for some reason right up against the bank. Early, late, and mid day if there is cloud cover. Fish it as slowly as possible, changing speeds and fish a trailer hook. Good luck. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted May 28, 2010 Super User Posted May 28, 2010 Also a decent choice at times when the water is choppy and in the rain as well.Over submerged veggies and through pads.Try to bump brush, sticks, logs, pillings, stumps. Don't hesitate to make multiple casts to likely areas. It is a reaction bait and sometimes you have to irritate them enough with it.As a general rule slower is better but you should change speeds every so often when pounding a particular spot to see what they want. Stick with it if your determined to catch fish on it.Don't make a few random casts then put it down. It is generally known to produce larger than average fish. Quote

Red Bear Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 ive had better luck fishing buzz baits underwater like a spinnerbait than on top Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 28, 2010 Super User Posted May 28, 2010 All of the above conditions. I like to fish them as low as possible come to a like bass holding spot and kill the retieve, let it drop below the water and the get back to the surface as fast as possible and then repeat. The stop & go will trigger some strikes as well. MHO Quote
backwater4 Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Slow as possible, close or right over cover and throw it occasionally all day long, under any conditions. Quote
kbkindle Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 I have fished them for years. Cant think of a time when not to fish one. One is tied on a rod at all times i like the 1/4 oz the best. If there hitting short of course use a trailor hook. I use power pro #30 on all my spinners, top water ,buzzbaits Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted May 29, 2010 Super User Posted May 29, 2010 Fish them as slowly as possible while still allowing them to crawl over the surface. Like most any topwater they are best during low light conditions and cloudy days. Sometimes I do catch bass on them during the middle of the day if bass are holding in long expanses of shallow water with weeds or other cover. They are at their best when fished close to or through cover. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 30, 2010 Super User Posted May 30, 2010 Buffy, you can actually throw a buzzbait at any time. I usually throw it at dawn and dusk but it can produce strikes all day long. The secret to throwing a buzzbait is to "balance" the bait with your rod and reel so that when the bait hits the water the spool stops and you can start your retrieve either right before or at the same time the bait hits the surface. PM me if you need to know how to "balance" your baits on a baitcater. Quote
JKarbo214 Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 I agree with everyone that you should fish them as slowly as possible. I use Cavitrons and they are the slowest buzzbait and don't really need you to focus on how slow you reel them in. I'd highly recommend trying them out. Quote
Smiths.R Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Seeing this topic recently made me get my dusty buzzbait out. Boy am I glad I did. Throw it everywhere, and all the time. I've been slaying the bass on my black buzzbait. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted June 15, 2010 Super User Posted June 15, 2010 Start with the right brand. I strongly recommend the 3/8 oz Cavitron, black on black: http://www.megastrikefishingproducts.com/shop/Red-Blade-Cavitron-BuzzBait-with-Black-Skirt.html 8-) Quote
dave Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 In the heat of the night Nothing gets your heart thumping like a buzzbait strike 4 feet off the bow at night. You can't see it coming and the explosion right at the boat is great. Quote
noursnagged Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 I have found using a high gear ratio reel that is smooth is key. IMO a steady retrieve is most effective, paralleling the shore is also a good tip Quote
