One of the all time greats is hanging up his shoes. The dude had crazy instincts and basketball IQ. He is one of my all time favorites. I still remember being in junior high and getting my #5 Cal jersey from eastbay. I wore that sucker about every day.

Hats off to the best point guard I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

Heard this on ESPN this AM.

A great player, enjoyed watching him.

Interesting 19 years for him, Grant Hill, and both retire the same weekend.

Jason Kidd was awesome...one of the few players who didn't get triple doubles because of points in his career.

And while i agree his basketball IQ was off the charts, as most good point guards are, his regular IQ i don't think was that great.  I remember him trying to get into Cal and i want to say it took him 5-6 tries to get the required 800, or whatever it is, on SAT for minimum admission requirements.

Grant Hill.....comes from a long line of what could have beens from Duke.  Seemed like a nice guy and was always a great role player but never panned out to be the stud he was supposed to be.  I will never forget sitting in the spectrum and watching him throw that pass to Christian Laetner in the elite 8 for the game winning shot against kentucky.....it was also the same time i lost all respect for Laetner after he stepped on that guy too.....good memories :) :)

He had a great first four years after which his career suffered because of persistent foot injuries.

If Kidd hadn't decided to retire, maybe 30 teams would've made the decision for him. He's been lauded a lot for both on and off the court, but was tarnished by a domestic abuse and anger management issue and a DWI arrest.

It's a shame Grant Hill had that injury. Without that, I think he goes down as one of the all time greats. He was putting up Lebron-like stat lines before anyone had any idea who Lebron was.

You sure you are talking about the same grant hill?  He was good but never scored nearly as much as lebron or assists or rebounds.  Now granted, lebron is probably the most talented player ever to step on the court but hill was nothing more than a few seasons of great basketball then riddled by injuries but i give him credit for realizing that and doing what he could to continue competing.

Yes, the same Grant Hill :)

Dude averaged 22, 8 and 6 for 6 years before his injury. He was also named to the All-NBA team 5-6 times. He led the league in triple-doubles for a few years, and even got more All Star votes than MJ one year. The guy was an absolute stud!

You're right that he was never as good as Lebron (then again, who is?) but very few guys could fill a stat sheet like Grant Hill, and he generally had very little help in Detroit.

Guess i was never that impressed with watching his game.  Yeah he could fill a stat sheet but on a bad team that happens quite a bit....And don't get me wrong i would have loved him to play on the sixers but i think he falls into one of those guys who are really good but you couldn't build a team around them.

Grant Hill and Jason Kidd were some awesome dudes. Being still in my teens, I never saw Hill in his prime. Or Kidd for that matter, Of course I've watched countless videos and highlights but still.... nothing like witnessing a highlight play live. Kidd managed to stay pretty decent for his last years int he league. Sadly, Grant Hill kinda started breaking down. The went out with more dignity then Shaq though! :P Another player that I hate to see retire soon is T-Mac. Man.. even though he's only 34 I imagine his NBA run is pretty much done. With his career changing injuries earlier he's been done for awhile. I feel bad to see such an awesome player's career ruined by excessive injury. Anyhow... that dude could've come close to touching Jordan's greatness I think. Being a Point/shooting guard myself I have watched countless video of Tracy and Kidd in their prime. Two insane players that I hate to let go. While Kidd didn't have flashing scoring numbers, that dude could dish out dimes like nobody else ever will. Once Tim Duncan is retired I feel like the NBA will officially begin its new generation. Not looking forward to this one. Kidd was the last true passing point guard IMO. Kyrie Irving and Chris Paul come close. Rondo? Maybe. Westbrook is a great passer but he tends to take more shots than a PG really should IMO. But, when he makes them, who cares? The assist is losing it's popularity in the NBA and most teams are becoming a 1 or 2 man show. I'll miss that last generation.

We'll just have to agree to disagree :)

Well that's no fun :)

And don't sleep on Holiday.....probably one of the best young PG in the league and getting better every year.

Here's a little factoid. As far as I know, Duncan is the last true superstar to have actually spent four years in college.

Can you imagine what 19 years of running up and down an NBA court can do to your body after you add in the previous years of playing basketball?

The NBA is for thugs. To play and be successful for 19 years is fantastic. No one gives anyone else a quarter. It is play or get clobbered.

Hope he does not have any lingering medical issues, like his neck, back, knees, ankles, feet, etc.

The NBA is a rough sport and the officials let them play and beat up each other. I am glad he got out when he did and hopefully he has his health and his money.

I hope the wife he beat the crap out of has her health first, and if jason doesn't, it's karma. He got paid for any issues he might have health wise.
