The problem I had last year hunting on public land in Kansas was other hunters constantly setting up around me even after I had flashed them with my flashlight to let them know where I was. I could tell a long story here but let me just state that last year's hunting was the single most frustrating experience in my life. I've sworn off public land (at least anywhere near Wichita) for gun season. I understand there are far less bow hunters here and I'm getting my first bow next month so that I can maybe avoid the fools with rifles in December. Grr.

That's the key for me. All my hunting areas are inside city limits where firearms aren't allowed but archery gear is ok.

Ain't getting me nowhere near public lands when the orange army hits the woods. That's about the time I either go fishing or head up to my buddies hunting club. Ain't no way, no how I'm going in the woods with all those trigger happy morons running around.

I'm getting my first bow next month with hopes to be ready by archery season. The much longer season combined with the lower amount (but still present) of bow hunters might offer a better experience.

Bow hunting is a beautiful thing, here in MD we have a 5 month bow season so you get a ton more time in the field. I'm also lucky enough to live within 30 mins or so of my lease so I can get a lot of evening hunts in during the week before daylight savings time comes around. Deer are also a lot easier to pattern early bow season, and usually when you see one buck you'll generally see a few more. It's also nice because the deer are just cruising around nice and calm, but once the orange army hits the woods the deer are walking around like they're on pins and needles. Good luck with the new bow, shoot straight.

I have been fortunate enough to hunt many species all over the U.S. I guess that's one of the benefits of being raised as an Army brat and being an active duty Soldier as an adult. I've hunted in AK, AZ, CO, KS, KY, MO, NE, OK, OH, and WV, Over the years, I've hunted Gambels. scaled, mearns, and bobwhite quail, ruffed, sharptail, and blue grouse, ptarmigan, pheasant, waterfowl (dozens of species), whitetails, mule deer, elk, moose, pronghorn, rabbit, squirrels. I never got into turkey hunting because the season tends to run concurrently with some of the best bass fishing. My favorites are bobwhites in my home state of OK and mule deer in CO.

I cut my "hunting" teeth on the bobwhite.  They aren't doing so great in our state anymore.

Go west, my friend. I'm from NE OK (Chelsea), but I make a trip out west every year around New Years, and I always find birds. PM me, and I'll let you in on some insider info.

P.S. If you make the trip, you had better pack your walking boots and a good dog. You will get a workout.

Turkey season is about as close to elk hunting as you can get and dirt cheap.

Mostly deer and turkey, but would love to take some trips for moose, elk and other big game.

Anybody ever hunt with Indian Creek Outfitters in Kansas? I've already booked my hunt with them just wondering if anybody has already been there that can give some insight of what to expect. I'm gambling but I've gotta try for a Kansas monster.

ATX, if all else fails and the trip doesnt go as planned if you can get back to KS you will probably do fine in walk in areas. I have never hired an outfitter. Buddy of mine went to KS and hunted public, he could see another guy from the stand he was in. The guy let a bach group of 4 - 150"+ bucks walk right under him and never picked up a bow. Those guys out there are not like the east coast mentality of kill em all.

Ill have enough points to go to Iowa next year. Im thinking an elk or a pronghorn the year after. I love whitetails but I can hunt them at home or a lot closer to home(ohio, ny), so going half way across the US for one seems a little foolish.

I would never pay to hunt whitetail or anything I can shoot into back yard with the exception of a paid coyote hunt.

I don't have giants roaming my area I mean my buck last season was the biggest ever taken off that property and it was only a 130class. If I went on a hunt out of state and shot a 150 or better everything back home would be dinks and I would probably not enjoy it as much.

Jhoff that is my plan.. While there i hope to look at some public areas for future hunts. Clay.. That's one way to look at it... But I'm from south east Texas and we do have monster bucks, at least in antler growth.. I am mostly excited about the new terrain and different experience. My bucket list has several states and also a few Country's to hunt. I still have and will continue to love my back yard. To each his own I guess. And it amazes me how hunting new areas helps me back home.. Always room to grow.

I'm a hunter as well. I live in West Virginia and hunt whitetail and turkey.

I hunt just about everything, but my favorite two have to be deer and turkey.

Turkey is far and above the most exciting hunting I do every year, nothing like stalking a bird that will spook at the slightest glimpse of you. I get more excited over deer hunting, but have more fun turkey hunting.

If it walks or crawls or swims I hunt or catch it, I fell 42 feet in 1991 as a Union Iron Worker "BUILDING AMERICA" I had to have help getting to the bathroom for 3 months, and after that almost a year later I had missed my first hunting season and first Worlds Largest Walleye Run in the past 40 some years. in 1992 I had to take an early pension from the Iron Workers, a job I loved almost as much as fishing and hunting. Every since it is all I do, I have a small shop servicing and tuning reels and selling custom leaders and lure making supplies. So I decide when it's time to hunt and time to fish,,,,,,,,which is almost EVERY DAY!!!  I for the last 5 or 6 years have been almost bow and handgun only except for some late spring ground hog. I have a new crossbow (had to give up the Hoyt 3 years ago because of neck and shoulder problems from my previous accidents) ordered, it is in Mouthwing Snow Camo, will be my winter coyote killer and late season Whitetail bow. this is what I do when I'm not chasing Walleye Pike Musky or Salmon, once in a while Bass, and mostly Smallmouth!! "THE LORD CERTAINLY MOVES IN MYSTERIOUS WAY'S" ,,,,  Life is grand, if you just play the cards your dealt the best you can!!

Whitetail hunting is my passion! I turkey hunt when I have time, but I'd rather bass fish in the spring.

Of the game I regularly hunt, my favorites are coyote, deer, rabbit, and pheasant - in that order.  My dream hunts would be elk and/or mulies out west somewhere.  As far as deer go, I mostly gun hunt, but I'm getting back into archery for this fall.  Hope it goes well!

My other biggest passion besides fishign is whitetail hunting and waterfowl hunting here in upstate NY!
