I had a 201E5 on order, and I chickened out and cancelled it because I wasn't sure if I could justify dropping $200 on another Chronarch and another $160 on another Crucial just for crank baits. I do throw deep cranks a bunch in the summer, but I throw more lipless cranks because I can count them down to the desired depth. I know a 5:5:1 reel would be great for deep cranks, but is that all it will be good for? Does anyone throw anything else on this gear ratio? If a 5:5:1 reel would work well with lipless cranks then I may re submit my order. I know I could go a much cheaper route for a cranking set up than a 201E5 and Crucial, but that's what I'm used to now so that's what I'm looking at.

IMO - the optimum reels for deep cranks and lipless cranks are two different animals. I use a 4.7:1 (19ipt) or 5.2:1 (21ipt) reel for deep cranks. My primary gear ratio for lipless cranks is a 6.4:1 (26ipt) and at times I use a 7.1:1 (29ipt) reel when I want to get them moving a bit faster in open water.  While I could make do with a 23ipt reel for deep cranks, I know I wouldn't be happy trying to use it for lipless...

That's why getting a dedicated cranking reel is a tough purchase for me. If a 5:5:1 could work well with lipless cranks then it would be a no brainer. Also, I had been using a 6:4:1 reel for deep cranking and doing fine.

I agree 100%. I tried to use a 4.7:1 for lipless cranks and felt I was working really hard to get the bait moving as fast as I wanted it to. I switched to 6.4:1 and left the 4 to deep diving duties only.

Maybe I'll just stick to my 6:5:1s then. I know KVD uses a cranking reel for his lipless duties, but I'm not sure how I would like it.

Its all on you what you want to use, I have 3 G3 Abu Winches now for my 3 cranking rods and have no problems.

How do you like lipless cranks on those?

I use a fast reel for lipless cranks as I like to yo-yo them so I need to pick up slack quick but a 5.5:1 can be used for anything, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits as well as shallow diving and square bills. I remember when 5.1:1 was considered fast but in all hoesty I do all my cranking now with a 6.3::1 reel but my deepest cranking is only done with a DT 14 and a DT 16 which is rare, and there are pros like Randy Mcabee who use a 7.1:1 for all their cranking. The reason for the low gear ratio is they have more torque so it makes it a little easier but todays reels are much smoother so they don't ever get too hard to crank.

Look at the IPT on them. The 5 gear has 23. The 50E has 25 and the 6 gear has 27.

What's closer to what you have been using? The STX in a 6 gear is 26.

If you were to make it a dedicated cranking set up, and use lipless or even squarebills say 75% of the time, I would say you need a faster IPT like 25 plus. For me, no matter what the crank, 26-27 is just too fast and I end up being worn out after 100 plus casts. Even on lipless cranks it wears me out. I was using my 25 IPT 50E and its too much for me. I'm going with an E5 next month. 23 I can speed it up just a tad and be perfect for lipless or average speed and be fine for deep diving cranks.

I've been using 19IPT reel to crank with for about a year and love it, but lipless cranks its a bit too slow.

Some say get faster and just slow your cranking speed down, but for me it throws me off.

I think your over thinking it. I'm running the 201e5 with a Dobyns 684cb. When I throw cranks up to 10 feet deep I reel normal. More than 10 I reel slower. Lip less and rattle traps I reel faster. Imo just adjust your retrieve speed for what your throwing and the chronarch will be perfect for the job. Also as much of a shimano fan that I am I wouldn't get a crucial for cranks, too tip heavy. All I've ever used for cranks are St. Croix, Fenwick and now my Dobyns.

I already have a Crucial for crank baits and love it lol.

Assuming fishing is something you will be doing for many years down the road thats justification in it self. As long as you can afford it you may as well get the correct tool for the job. You will be a lot happier this summer and most likely, with shimanos reputation for the longevity of their products, 15 years down the road. If money is tight just save or wait for sales. Deep cranking set ups arent going anywhere for a long time. Id personally get a different rod but the reel is spot on. You will probably be a lot happier on the water fishing with what you want and being more effective rsther than wondering "what if...".

Not a bad rod at all. They do feel tip heavy but thats the last thing im worried about cranking. I just prefer a different brand. If you like it then thats all that matters.

Honestly I don't use lipless cranks enough to really have an opinion. But they're all paired up with St Croix rods (LTB Big Cranker, Magnum Cranker and a 7'2mm old style Legend Xtreme) and they balance really well.

If you are able to justify it let me know as I am in the same situation as you. Just can't justify it.
