NC_Bass6 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Does anyone else's thumb itch after handling larger bass? i don't have this problem with small bass but when i thumb bigger bass my thumb will itch all day afterwards. Bigger bass' grind plates are usually rougher i was wondering if that had anything to do with it? Quote

Brian6428 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Never had that problem before. I have held some average sized fish (1.5-2 lbs) whose lips seemed to be unusually rough, almost to the point of hurting my thumb when they would squirm, but no itching afterwards. Brian Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 1, 2013 Super User Posted June 1, 2013 lol this has to be the funniest question i have ever seen on any forum......I believe what you are referring to i always called "bass thumb" it is a good thing to have and i will be proud to have it any chance i get. I haven't noticed a difference in larger versus smaller fish but for me it is when i have a good numbers day and my thumb gets tore up from the bass "teeth". Quote
greyleg33 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Never had thumb itch from big bass but fished the Umqua river with a partner and together boated something on the order of 200 smallies. That brought about a bleeding thumb. Sadly none were bigger than 2#. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 1, 2013 Super User Posted June 1, 2013 Sounds like a great problem to have. 3 Quote
GeorgiaBassBros Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Never had my thumb itself itch but i have had my fingers after removing the hooks through the gills of gut hooked fish (fish almost always survive). Its got something to do with the slime and your skin being broken. Dont bother me too bad so i dont pay much attention to it. But i do love it when your thumb gets all torn up after catchin a bunch of fish Quote
derekxec Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 man i hate it when my thumb gets tore up from bass mouth....then i sit there all night rubbing it with my other fingers haha Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 1, 2013 Super User Posted June 1, 2013 Congratulations, Grayson. You want your thumb to be torn up at the end of the day. That means that you had to hold many bass by their lower lip to remove the hook. A torn up thumb is a badge of honor. Not everyone earns that badge on every fishing trip. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 1, 2013 Super User Posted June 1, 2013 By the way, Neosporin or Bactrin on your thumb when you go to sleep will help the healing process. Quote
topwaterrob Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 My hands itch whenever I handle LMB. I talked to my dermotologist, she says i have an allergy to either the slime coating or something along those lines. Its pretty common and she said just keep alcohol wipes on board to clean hands and it keeps the itch at bay for me... Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted June 1, 2013 Super User Posted June 1, 2013 Could be bass herpes. You should probably get yourself checked. 3 Quote

Super User BassinLou Posted June 1, 2013 Super User Posted June 1, 2013 Bass thumb is awesome. Proof you slayed them. Whenever someone you know say they caught a lot of bass, check their thumbs. Quote
