GaterB Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 What braid works best for spinning reels? I'm having a lot of trouble with wind knots and line coming off of the spool on my spinning reel. I'm using powerpro 8# and its a nuisance. I've had to cut line and retie many times now and I'm fed up. Any advice? Quote
29JMP29 Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 It depends what you are using it for. For drop shots and shaky heads I use 10 lb sunline sx1. It sinks so it is good for deeper water and stuff. I always use a 3 - 4 foot leader when I am fishing braid though Quote
PondBoss Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Sounds like you may have too much line on your spool if it's unwinding off the spool on it's own. Technically braid has zero memory so theoretically it shouldn't uncoil. I use 20lb Spider Wire Stealth to a 8lb fluoro leader and have no such issues. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 31, 2013 Super User Posted May 31, 2013 Braid will twist like any other line on spinning gear just not as bad. Windknots are sometimes caused by casting too hard, the line comes off the spool very fast and hits for first guide and that's where the knot occurs. My fix, I don't overspool maybe a 1/4 inch from the lip and I make long flowing casts, not a hard snap cast. There are videos, one on the Spanish Fly website, showing how the line hitting the first guide can cause that knot or tangle, Fuji has a K-guide that is supposed to eliminate that, I have not used a rod with those guides as yet. I've never tried braid but I've had this same problem with mono. Make sure you don't overfill your spools. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 31, 2013 Super User Posted May 31, 2013 I like Fireline. Have been using it for years. Especially in the lighter tests. I highly recommend the Crystal version. Just recently loaded one rig with 10# test PP. Looks promising. Do not overfill your spools. Do not "snap cast" hard - that should eliminate your wind knots. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 31, 2013 Super User Posted May 31, 2013 Agree with the guys talking about overfilling your spool. Can be a real pain... So many choices of braid, so many opinions. I have one spool filled with 10lb Fireline, one with Tuf-Line, all the rest are Power Pro 10 lb (20 on my baitcaster). Of all those, I like Power Pro the best. Just my experience. Feel it lays best on the spool, etc. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted May 31, 2013 Super User Posted May 31, 2013 Already answered above I think Too much line on your spool caused this for me early on. I leave at least 1/4" now and rarely have problems. When i do have problems it's usually a combination of windy days and trying to cast too hard. I use PowerPro 10lb with an 8lb leader with little/no issues now that I learned to spool it properly and cast smoothly. Quote

You don't need to swing for the fences when casting on a spinning rod. If its really windy, low trajectory casts from the side work much better. Quote

Also try to stop the line just before it enters the water, this will help prevent a bow in the line on windy days. With a little practice you can stop the line and close the bail in an effortless motion be using your hand to do both. Some people will use the index finger of their casting hand to catch the line, then close the bail with the other hand. I prefer to do both with the same hand. Quote
derekxec Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 also check out the microwave guide system there should be some rods showing up soon if not already with it on...i built a rod with these some weeks ago and so far i can cast further and really have no problems at all...it looks odd but it tames the line at the first guide and does it very well Quote
