How many people out there net their own fish while out alone?

I dont even carry a net yet but I fish tournaments that allow it. But it sometimes seems you might lose the fish easier to me if you grabbing for somthing taking your hand off the rod and etc.

Should I get one or what?

Theres somthing about that feeling of grabbing a bass by the lip by the boat like the pros, but somthing tells me it could get tricky with cranks.

I use one for cranks when I'm solo because it might be hard to get the hooks out by myself. I use one all the time in tourneys...except for dinks. They get swung on board.

Always use a net for big fish, but just swing the dinks in the boat.  I have lost fish at the side of the boat when I tried to get them in without a net.

I use a large rubber net myself, and even prefer to net my own fish even with someone else in the boat.   You develop a routine, and it becomes easy/natural after a while.  I have had countless fish become unhooked upon entering the net, and most of those would have been lost.

LoopDad2 - You got lucky since you didn't use one.  You would have been mad if you lost that huge fish!

Never used one until this year joining a bass club and its saved a few fish that would have been lost otherwise.  As a bank beater I don't carry a net but may soon start especially when bringing in a small fiesty bass on open hooks

I have this one old video with Bob Crupi and Dan Kadota, where Dan says > If its only like a 10-13 lb'er, it's not a big deal.... But if its a "big bass" use a net !  ;)

Fish

PS, If I'm fishing in a place that might have big catfish, that's another reason to carry a net. Total PITA to land one of those big, slippery things without one.

Long time ago I used a net all of the time while catfishing.  I don't think that I have ever used one while bass fishing.

I use a Leverage Landing net.  I'd rather net my fish myself than let someone else screw it up.

This.  Plus, the waters I fish have many pike,  Don't try to lip one of them.

I've never used a net before but after my last fishing trip I'm definately going to invest in one with a nice long reach. I had to go swimming to retrieve a fish that my fiance had got caught up on a bit of foul line and a partially submerged tree. It was just out of reach and if I had a net with me I could have probably reached out and got it.

Yes, alone or in a tournament I will have a net on the boat.

Do I use it all the time? No, of course not.

But if I think I have one that I want to see or if I am fishing with treble hook baits out comes the net.
