Sorry if this is confusing, but they all work.

Some miscellaneous comments in no particular order.

Buzzbaits can be used in semi-weedy water or open water. I think they're good in the rain and on choppy water. I always use a trailer hook.

Poppers can be used in multiple ways; one way is when you're targeting a small area because you can pop them without moving them much distance.

Buzzbaits, Jitterbugs and walking baits can be used to cover water.

Frogs, both the hollow bodied type and soft plastics, work great in weedy water but they can also be used in open water.

I'm a Jitterbug nut and fish them a lot, maybe too much. I use the 5/8 oz. in black.

Good luck. Topwaters are a lot of fun and don't believe it if you hear that they shouldn't be used under bright conditions.

I use poppers and buzzbaits. They are both awesome. I use buzzbaits to cover ground. But if the top water is going off than a popper will be used. It's all trial and error. Can't go work.

Shouldn't this be under the fishing tackle section?

To add to what others said colors can vary by lake, time of day, water clarity, etc.

There is no best everybody has their favorites, I fish mainly clear water so natural colors work best for me.

Here is what I think you should start with as it will cover you pretty good especially if you are fishing from shore. Get a single blade buzzbait like the original lunker lure and a popper, a good one to get is the chug bug and there is a reason. This selection will give you both a fast moving bait and a slow bait that you can work quick once you learn how to use it. The reason for the chug bug specifically is that it is a quality bait that won't break the bank and the most important thing is that it is a popper that will also walk the dog and it will do it fairly easy. Yes, there are really a lot of other great brands and better baits but to learn, these will be perfect I would think and I like them so much I still use both Lunker Lure buzzbaits and the chug bugs, well I have a box with just those so I really like them. Anyway, you will learn to walk the dog quicker and easier with keeping the cost down and you'll have effective baits.

As far as topwaters go I've had alot of good fish come off AR Lures Pencil - 90 it's walking bait but I've caught about half of my bass on it just slowly retrieving it with a little twitch every 10-20 seconds or so. If you are interested in this lure one thing you need ot know is it is very light and will work best on light tackle.

I really like buzzbaits but have had very little success with them personally though I know they work well for many people.

Here's another vote for the jitterbug.  I also use the 5/8 ounce in black.
