crankbait2009 Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 hey all, I currently have a battery that is designated to the trolling motor. I would like to pick up an additional battery to run only the boat lights and the depth finder. The lights will very seldom be used but still would like a battery to carry the load. The depth finder will run the whole time out...... I am not familiar how much juice the lights/depthfinder would require, but can someone give me some advice on what size battery I'd need? Quote
PotomacBassin Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Dude, just hook the two up in parallel. This way your trolling motor will have two batteries to go off of then. Plenty of juice for everything. The only issue would be is if the old battery is that--old. The newer battery will hold a charge better and will be drained by the older one. Not a horrible issue to have, but it's always recommended to start running batteries in parallel with two new batteries. Quote
jhoffman Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 If youre going to run two parallel just like in a series they should be identical batteries with identical age. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 29, 2013 Super User Posted May 29, 2013 Another option, you can buy a 12v lawnmower battery for under $30 Quote

I'm not sure if lawnmower batteries are deepcycle/cranking, but if you're going to rig it up the lights/depth finder I would make sure the lawnmower battery is not just a cranking battery. They make deepcycle/cranking batteries that will last longer and you can probably pick one up pretty cheap. A regular cranking battery is like a car battery and they aren't designed to be depleted much below full charge. The hybrid deepcyle/cranking will be able to be depleted and return to full charge more times than a simple cranking battery. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted June 2, 2013 Author Posted June 2, 2013 I was talking to a few local guys as well, they mentioned the same thing. I have heard of trolling motor batteries.......... When you mention "cheap", what price range would I be looking at? closer to $50, or closer to $100+? Quote
derekxec Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 my brother just bought a deep cycle from walmart an everstart and it was like $90....cheapish but at the factory the only thing different is the name on the battery Quote

I'm sure Walmart is pretty competitive, but look at the auto parts stores as well (Advanced Auto/AutoZone/Pepboys). Just look for a 'deep cycle' battery and this is what's knows as a trolling motor battery. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 3, 2013 Super User Posted June 3, 2013 He's not looking for a TM battery. Just something for the lights and graph Quote
crankbait2009 Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 Everywhere I have looked, I am seeing the battery I need for $80 or so bucks. Looks like it is what it is Quote
