(='_'=) Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 hey, im trying to find info on this motor. is it reliable?? does it spends a lot of gas?? any issues i should be aware of?? i have the possibility of getting a 19´ boat with this 200 HP Mercury Black Max, so i want to make an informed decision... on my current 1977 Johnson, 85 HP, i can fish an entire day with about $20-$25... but this boat is very small, has mini casting decks, and wont allow me to go into bigger waters.... thats why im looking to upgrade... jhoffman Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 What year and model is the motor. Get that information and start googling, youll see the issues people have fast. Quote
(='_'=) Posted May 29, 2013 Author Posted May 29, 2013 well im guessing same as the boat, 1990... Quote
JCOX2011 Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I don't have a black max as mine is fuel injected. As to the gas I'm not sure yet as I haven't spent but 5 hours in the boat. When I made the choice on a 200 mercury gas consumption went out the window for me though the only plus side I have drawn on at the moment is that I haven't worked my way up to running around the lake wide open yet so I have to assume my gas consumption is minimal. Sorry I am new to all things bass boats so I am unable to provide you with any additional information. One thing I would note is not to assume the motor would be the same year as the boat. When I was searching around here I would often find boats with replaced motors because of this issue or that issue. Quote
RyneB Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I can only comment on gas. It will be expensive. But it depends what type of fishing you are doing. I have a 150, but my primary place to fish is a strip pit where I only start the outboard to load and unload. When I go to bigger reservoirs and run and gun, I spend about $70 a day. If I strictly fished big reservoirs every weekend, I wouldn't be able to afford my gas. Quote
(='_'=) Posted May 30, 2013 Author Posted May 30, 2013 thanx!! the local lake i mostly fish is a 5-6 mile long, 400 yard wide lake, i unload the boat and begin fishing all the way to the dam, and then from there i come back... rarely do i ever go 3 times to the dam, so that would be 36 miles total.... when i find fish quickly, i dont even get to the dam... i will ask the owner about the year of the boat.... any more input?? EDIT: according to the owner, boat and motor are the same year... but i guess as somebody mentioned, its not the year, but the maintenance the otor received, what matters the most... Quote
jhoffman Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 In the five seconds I spent doing a little reading it seems this motor can have an issue with the oil injection system being that one gear is plastic, one is steel or aluminum. It may be well past that problem and the injection might have been removed in favor of pre-mixing, id say if it was, thats better for you. http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/014028.html It also appears that due to size and age its got TERRIBLE fuel economy. http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/249127-does-anyone-know-about-mercury-black-max-outboards.html Quote
(='_'=) Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 thank you!! that was a lot of good info i hadnt found.... removing the oil injection system and premixing the oil with the gas shouldnt be a problem, i think i can remove the system myself.. now, i read some of these are fuel injected and some carbd?? or was that a mistake?? do you know at what time they began fuel injection?? Downeaster2010 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 I had a lot of black max outboards, and they were all good. If you get a faster boat, you tend to want to travel more and consequently will give it more throttle, using twice as much gas as you do now. It doesn't matter if it is a Merc or some other kind, if it is a larger motor it will use more gas and oil. The exception being the four strokes are down right stingy on fuel. Quote
