Hey guys,

I have a jon boat that I converted to a bass boat with a casting deck up front that I have a foot controlled minn kota edge 45# thrust trolling motor mounted to. I bought the motor a month ago at BPS and the past three times I have been out fishing it has been acting up.

The first time when I was on 5 speed I noticed it randomly turned off. I freaked out because I thought I hit something under the water. I lost power momentarily, switched it between mom/off/con and it turned back on and I continued. I was heading in to the dock and it died again. I messed around with my wires and thought that the problem was my butt connectors between my 6 wire going to my batteries and the 8 wire connected to the foot control were loose. I joined them together and got back to the dock. I took it home rewired the darn thing and thought I fixed the problem and it was just the connectors were loose.

I took my boat out again yesterday and when I was in momentary on 2 speed cruising around it died again. I switched between mom/off/con and messed around with the speed dial and the power picked back up again and I took it back to the dock and went home. I rewired AGAIN, replaced the fuse in my 50 amp fuse box and tested it and it seemed to be working fine.

I took my boat out this morning and after fishing for about 4 hours the darn thing died AGAIN. This time it turned back on only for a second after I knocked on the foot pedal, I switched it to 4 speed and tried to head back in. Then it completely died. Nothing I tried worked. Luckily I had my other trolling motor on the transom to get me back to the dock.

I called Minn Kota customer support, tried my best to explain the problems. The man said it could possibly be a faulty circuit board but they really had no answers other than to take it to the repair center or hopefully exchange it for a new one at BPS because it was so new. I chose the latter. I just installed the new motor that BPS gave me and it seems to be running fine. I'm very grateful they exchanged it.

My questions are (I apologize for the long post) what do you guys think could be the issues? I baby my gear, don't slam anything and take great care of it.

My confidence in this motor is shattered and I almost wanted to pay a little more today and buy a motor guide but I decided against it and that I would give the new one a shot and hope nothing is faulty in it.

Thanks for the help

Perhaps a voltage issue?  If the tech suspects a faulty board that would be the first thing I would look at.  I am new to boating so I have to ask can you hook your other trolling motor to the same wires and if so does the problem replicate to it?

could have just been a faulty model. i have that same exact one with no problems what so ever... when stuff is mass produced, its can be easy for some models to slip past inspection... how is the new one?

Sounds like a connection problem to me. Had the same problem and was just as frustrated as you.

Turned out to be the connection at the battery. Check that out too, especially if you're using alligator type clips.

I have this motor too and I am stuck in speed one only. When I roll the dial to off, it still runs. When I roll it to 5 it still spins at one. Anybody know anything? I know this is an old post.

I have an all terrain took it out got 60 from the dock turned trolling motor on to use and the foot pedal when I stepped on it did nothing but smoked badly so I to row back to dock never fished called minn kota two days later told me that line has been discontinued they have no circuit board for it too try an get an edge foot pedal even though they are discontinued making but the problem is I cannot find one , I can buy a new edge but why would I do that if you can’t get it fixed so if anyone knows of where I can get a control board for the foot pedal of an all terrain or I can purchase a foot pedal for an edge it would be certainly appreciated. Thank you
