airborne_angler Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Ive watched the video that Glenn put together about spinnerbaits. I recall him distincly mentioning that a spiining rod/reel is not ideal for using spinnerbaits. What about Chatterbaits, can they be used with spinning rod/reel setups. I ask because chatterbaits are so much more than just a plain ol spinnerbait. Or are Chatterbaits best to be thrown with baitcasting equipment? Quote
Shad_Master Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I remember reading an article when these first hit the market that they are best thrown on bait casters with braided line. That's the way I have always done it since then. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 8, 2010 Super User Posted June 8, 2010 I've thrown both baits on spinning, and baitcasters..For real light spinnerbaits, I'll use a spinning rig..3/8 oz and up, I prefer a BC..especailly for chatterbaits, I find it's much easier to control the speed, which controls the depth. With lots of weeds, the BC lets me just tick the tops of the weeds with more control. I normally use 1/2oz Chatterbaits. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted June 8, 2010 Super User Posted June 8, 2010 IMHO a chatterbait is a "power" lure that is ideally suited to baitcast. I usually fish a 1/2 oz, and never lighter than 3/8. I always fish it on heavier line, and I often throw it into cover I would not fish with spinning gear. With the proper rod and braided line, spinning gear is a viable option; it just doesn't work for me. Use what works for you. Good luck. Quote

I agree on the baitcast gear but your missing out not using the smaller ones. In shallow dirty water a small chatterbait does really well. You can use a spinning rod on some of the smaller ones but other than that stick with baitcasters. And I have thrown chatterbaits alot and I dont think they compare well to spinnerbaits. They cant be fished the same since they arent as weedless and their whole lift system is different. I think the are really more similar to lipless crankbaits. Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 9, 2010 Super User Posted June 9, 2010 Perhaps baitcasting is better, I wouldn't know. But I regularly use 1/4 oz. spinnerbaits and 3/8 oz. Chatterbait-style lures on spinning equipment and catch fish and have no problems. Maybe it is felt that baitcasting is better, not because of the lure, per se, but because it is recommended that they be fished on heavier line which is better handled by baitcasting. Whatever, I've used 10-12# mono and 15# braid on my spinning equipment. Based on my experience, if you have spinning gear you should not be deterred from using these lures as long as you stay within the equipment's capabilities. Quote
shootermcbob Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I use both. I find that I am much more effective throwing lighter baits (1/4 oz or less) on spinning gear, including spinnerbaits. I use baitcasters for as much as I can as I prefer the baitcasting setup, but it is easier for me to throw lighter stuff on spinning rigs. I also throw some 1/4 buzzbaits on spinning gear with no problems. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 10, 2010 Super User Posted June 10, 2010 Marty, 50# test braids are the same diameter as 10# mono. There is no performance loss with using that diameter superline. Actually it will work better than the 10# mono on spinning gear (no memory and very castable). Quote

I just haven't had a need to go stronger than 15# based on what I do. Quote
