s freud Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I am looking to get my first baitcaster reel and found three from a guy on craigslist. Which one is the best to learn on and run with? All are less than $30 and about 5 years old. Thanks! Quantum Accurist PT Burner Abu Garcia Revo S (he says the handle is loose and may need a pin or something, but it still works) -I am wary because I have no clue how to fix. Super User webertime Posted May 28, 2013 Super User Posted May 28, 2013 Go $10 more and get a new Quantum Accurist CX500/1 on ebay fro $40+/- shipped. The cost of repairing a used reel may make the $30 initial price significantly higher. The Quantum is a great reel for $40. If you have an Accademy Sports nearby, I hear their Metal reel is a nice reel for a similar price when on sale. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Out of those 3 I have purchased the Quantum and it's a great reel and the PT performs very very well and has since I purchased it off ebay 4-5 yrs ago. Quote
Super User deep Posted May 28, 2013 Super User Posted May 28, 2013 If you're looking to get your "first" baitcaster, make you you get one that's easy to learn on. Some casting reels are more "finicky" than others (in my hands). Quote
Kyle Mahaffey Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I have a Bill Dance BC for my first one. I like it. I just didn't want to buy a expensive unit and then turn around and hate it. But It is easy to use and not to bad a bird nests now. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted May 28, 2013 Super User Posted May 28, 2013 Out of the three in normal circumstances (If the Revo S wasn't suspect), I'd pick the Revo S. Having said that I have no experience with any of these reels either. I am only going by reputation and popular consensus. Since it is suspect, I think the Accurist should be the way to go. I believe a couple people have owned one on board, the one that comes up is Darren M. Maybe send him a PM and ask him if the Accurist would be a good reel to learn from. The only Quantum I owned ever is the Energy PT, very solid reel and would be a good one to learn from. Quote
s freud Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 This is good feedback, and I never even thought of eBay for some reason. Does anyone have any experience with the cabellas reel? I can get it for $15. Seems hard to go wrong unless it is just a total nightmare. Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I say save up and get a Mettle from Academy. There are a few guys on here that love them, and reviews all around the internet have been impressive. Don't buy something to just buy something. Get the most for your money. If you buy a used reel, and it craps out or needs parts, then you have to go through the hassle of buying and installing those, when you could've just used that money to get a decent one right off the bat. The only good cabelas reels worth buying are the Grey colored Prodigy and the current prodigy, both are based of Daiwa reels (Advantage and Aggrest) the Tournaments are made by Danco or Silstar I believe. PondBoss Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I'm one of the H2O Xpress junkies and I say save a few bucks and get a Mettle, you won't be disappointed and you;ll have it forever. Quote

s freud Posted May 29, 2013 Author Posted May 29, 2013 Thanks for the input guys and if I like the baitcaster I will definitely check out the mettle. As I am just getting my feet wet, I went with the cabelas reel and a 6'6 lightning shock medium for $20 total. Seems like a sweet deal to me. Quote
BradH Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Revo S and fix it myself. The handle nut is loose. It's a 2 minute fix. Since it is your first baitcaster send it off to get fixed. Maybe try DVT. Quote
