Robertqq Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Hello, Great Forum. Do Pond fishing for the most part, and use a 7' UL Spinning rig. Rigged with about (hard to remember at my age) 6 pound test Power Pro. Have been trying some small Rapallas lately. Both floating and sinking styles. All with two treble hooks. I have about a four foot mono leader, with snap swivels, between the line and the lure. About 50 % of the time, when I look at the lure after retrieving it, the mono is tangled around the treble. Not sure if it happens during the cast itself, or during the retrieve. Driving me crazy. Any hints on how to avoid this would be most appreciated. Thanks, Bob Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 27, 2013 Super User Posted May 27, 2013 Happens to me too, at least you are using a leader and that will make untangling from the hooks easier. Try not using a snap swivel and tie a loopknot, making the loop as small as you can without hurting the action of the lure. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 27, 2013 Super User Posted May 27, 2013 This is going to happen every so often. To make it happen less often, try the following. Lose the snap swivel. Tie a loop knot instead. When casting, don't try to go for maximum distance. Instead, try to stop the bait in the air using your finger on the spool and let the line straighten out before the lure lands. After a while, that maneuver just becomes reflex and you don't have to think about it any more. Quote
The Young Gun Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 If you decide to use a loop knot, the canoe mans knot is my new favorite. Quote
Bass Junkie Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 I will echo the loop knot suggestion. Also, try using a stiffer leader material, such as a hard mono or even fluorocarbon. Quote
Robertqq Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 Hi, Thanks for suggestions. Will certainly try the stiffer mono leader. Question: just so I can learn something: Why the suggestions for doing away with a snap swivel and going to the loop-knot ? Not debating that it doesn't; if suggested I'm sure that it does, but hard to visualize why this might work better (than the snap swivel) ? Why does it ? Thanks, and best regards, Bob Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 28, 2013 Super User Posted May 28, 2013 The snap swivel hangs down and your Rapala is over running the line tangling the hooks. If you read the Rapala package, they suggest how to tie on the lure. A light weight thin wire snap without the swivel works on some diving models of Rapalas, the light weight Original Minnow doesn't work well with the way you are rigged. Tom Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I'll echo loosing the swivel and changing to a heavier line that's a little stiffer and won't sink as easily as the light mono. I had a similar problem throwing smaller Spooks on light line. Switched up to 10lb. and the problem went away. Quote
