I always watch the clearance section in the sporting goods section at Wal Mart. Starts in like February, certain items go on clearance, every week the price drops. When I feel its rock bottom I pounce...buy clearance stuff at a serious reduction in price.

This year has been different. Things went on clearance but prices haven't dropped. 2 weeks ago I went to the clearance section and it was empty. I panicked, thinking I missed out on a serious price drop on all those items.

Then I noticed some shopping carts with a bunch of stuff in them...it was all the clearance items and they had been marked down like crazy. I picked up a ton of hooks, Mustad Weighted Swimbait hooks, Gammy splitshot/ dropshot hooks and Some Owner hooks. Eacjh pack was marked $1.00. I scooped up every pack I could find.

There were some Manns A-rigs with the swimbaits in seperate packages marked at $5.00...I passed on those.

So I went back yesterday and noticed the Clearance section was stuffed full with the items that i saw in the shopping cart the other day. Prices on the A Rigs and the Swimbaits went from $5 back up to $10. An associate told me that the Dept Manager got in trouble for trying to blow all those clearance items out at a deep discount.

Guess I picked those packages of hooks up at the right time...

I have started checking all the sporting goods stores I shop in for clearance stuff. Amazing what deals we can find. I mentioned in a prior post that I have also taken to scratch and dent stuff ... Especially rods with broken tips. Most places I frequent think that is a death sentence for the stock and mark in way down, I take it home, and a new tip and we are off the races.

It seems there is a new sub-sport developing within our sport .... The art of finding the best clearance deals. I'm sure we all catch lots of small ones, but sometimes we hook a linker. :-)
