Went to BPS earlier this week, its located about 3 hrs away from where I live, so anytime I'm in the area...I just gotta visit.

After I left BPS I was on my way home on the Interstate and noticed a Dicks Sporting Goods. I've never been to one and knowing a big name like Shaw Grigsby is sponsored by them, I had to check it out.

Went in with big expectations...boy I was disappointed...this location had a fishing section with 3 aisles...nothing spectacular...I wasn't impressed, large section of Matzuo and Apex brand baits. Guess that make me a BPS Snob...Anyone else disappointed wit h the selection of tackle Dicks has?

Dick's where i live is terrible. the local walmart has a better selection at 1/3 the price. academy on the other hand is cheap and has a pretty nice fishing department.

Bass Pro Shops are more of a massive chain. Every one of their stores are going to have everything you need. I think Dick's stocks more local stuff. Things that work well in that particular area. At least my Dick's does.

The Wal Mart near me is atrocious. It makes the Dick's next door to it look like BPS. Went in today after Dick's cause they were out of Fat Ika's. They literally had half an isle of lures. It was pathetic.

I agree with Yanken here ... The thing I get most from BPS and Cabelas is the specialization.

I have to also offer a shout out to Cabela's Bargain Cave. I have found all sorts of great deals in that section. I suspect BPS has a similar area where they put scratch and dented stuff. I can't count the number of top-tier rods I have bought for 80 percent off regular price as along as I am wiling to make as small fix or two.

We are spoiled here in the Dallas Metroplex ... Two BPS and two Cabela's within a 45 min drive.

We got 3 brand new Dicks in OKC a few months ago and not a one has jack!

Now the dicks back home in Kansas is stocked full of goodies. Go figure

BPS is like the Disneyland of outdoor stores.  There's no question there.  Kind of hard for another store to compare.  I've never been to Dick's before but I went to a Gander Mountain for the first time Thursday.  It was nice and they had a decent selection but it was no BPS.

We have 2 BPS, a Cabela's, Roger's, and now 2 Academy's going into the KC area. I can't blame DSG for not bothering to stock much hunting and fishing gear in my area.

I have 2 DSG in my area, 1 that is on my way home every morning has a good selection of what I use, the other has a better selection, being 20 minutes away I hardly go.  I like both Gander and BPS but each of them are a 45 minute drive, I only go if I want something specific that I want to see face to face, otherwise I'd order on line and save the time and miles.

You do live in Arizona...

Ours has 4 aisles devoted to weights and hooks, 2 for trout, 5 for soft plastics, 1 for rapala, 1 for strike king and various other cranks, and one for spinnerbaits and jigs. Keep in mind these are all 12 ft long aisles.

If its a big company we stock it.

We have BPS and Cabelas near and I prefer the locally family owned Rogers. Awesome assortment of everything, great prices and a very knowledgeable staff.

the local dick's by me has 3 isles for just plastics then another three for lures and then a giant glass case full of reels with an isle of line next to it. I'm rather impressed with it.

The Dick's in Knoxville has 2 things: Jack and Crap. If I go anywhere else besides BPS, it's Academy or Gander.

Most of the dsg's in my area have fishermen working in the fishing section so its usually stocked with good stuff. We have jackall, luckycraft, great selections of plastics. I always get awesome deals on braid and rapalas when they do liquidation sales. I also hit the clearance sections everytime i go, always get good deals on strike king baits and most plastics.

the dicks like 5 mins from me has about 15 isles of fishing stuff and holds most of what i use...gander is like 20 mins away and has a ton of stuff but they are a bit expensive

now bps is about an hour away and when i go there i can easily spend 3-4 hours looking at everything lol

The 2 DSGs by me carry a decent amount of stuff.  There is some low-end stuff but plenty of quality and even some things you would not expect (like Jackall and RI).  I find the prices not to be very good, plus you pay sales tax and gas to drive there.  I believe Consumer Reports recently did a survey on stores that sell merchandise for outdoor sports.  I believe Dicks was middle of the pack as far as price.  They do have coupons and other deals you can combine to get the most for your money.  I used to go to their website and look at the weekly circular for my local stores.  That way you know what is on sale before you decide to go.

BTW, check your receipts if you buy anything. They overcharged me plenty of times.  Very often they were too slow to enter sales and other promos for that week..  Also, if the website shows that something is on sale and the store does not you can bring it to their attention and they will give you the discount.  This happened several times and is another reason I don't shop there that often.

The other thing I don't like about them is that the aisles are a mess and it can take a long time to sort through all of it to see if they really have what you are looking for.  I use them if I need something in a pinch (like Trick Worms).

POST OF THE YEAR

There's two Gander mt. each forty miles from me, an Acadamy about 30 miles and a Dicks about 35 miles and a Wal mart 15 miles from me.  Wal mart and Dicks are both bad (wal mart being by far the worst).  Both Ganders have gotten much better.  Acadamy is good but not as good as Gander.  It's 120 miles to nearest BPS and I don't even know how far it is to Cableas.  I use a Gander Mountain master card and get points to spend at Gander, so they get most of my business.

You would think Walmart would make more of an effort, seeing as how they are the Major sponsor of the FLW.

The dicks sports here is pretty decent for fishing no where near a bps but they dont have the square footage either. They do have awesome specials though.

I will say now that I have an academy here, the desire to go to bps is somewhere between slim and none.

I have a few Dicks here in Central Florida...and they are pretty solid.  As others have said, great deals at times, and a very strong plastic bait selection. Probably 8-10 freshwater aisles and a few saltwater.
