So i recently picked up a jeep wrangler unlimited and i am looking for a way to mount the rods horizontally using the roll bars so i don' have to fold down a seat to transport my rods.

I picked up a few rod holders that i think will work but i wanted to see if anyone out there has done or seen a set up.  There is a decent amount of headroom so i don't see them being a problem in the ceiling area.

Thanks

Look up the Rod Saver Vehicle storage system.   I have one in my Ford Explorer and I can fit  20 or so rods on it.

I have nothing to add on top of what Fishes in Trees said. It's a good option.

Congrats on the new Wrangler and get it dirty. God hates nothing more than Wrangler owners who drive showroom clean vehicles.

X2...I use my dads 4dr Wrangler Sport sometimes, you dont want to be drilling holes in that speaker bar. This should do the trick. Congrats on the truck!

Can you post some pictures? Specifically where the straps are hooked. I only have hooks in the middle of my car and not the trunk.

I don't know how to do pictures and basically every installation is different.   On my Explorer Sport, (the 2 door model) ,for the front strap I removed the hand hold that helps you get into the back seat, threaded the hanger on to the screw and then replaced the hand hold.

For the rear hanger, there is a channel along the roof line that accepts the push pins that hold up the roof liner trim.   I eyeballed where that channel should continue and screwed a fairly large lag screw,  with an eye on it rather than a hex head into the channel.  Then I stretched the back part of the system between the two eye bolts.

I know I did a doofus job of explaining, but my installation works, it will hold 25 or so rods and has held up for going on 10 years now.  If you put your mind on it you will figure out how to adapt the installation to your vehicle.

flyfisher,  I did the exact thing you are talking about last summer.  I picked up a "Du-Bro Screw-In Rod Holder" from Cabelas.  I painted 2 short pieces of 3/4"x2" pine (about 7" long) and screwed the loops and hooks into it with about 1" between them. To the rear roll bar I used black zip ties to attach the peice of wood with the larger loops on it.  I just used double sided tape to stick the other peice with the hook-like parts.  You won't be able to see them, but I added wedges to the back block to have it sit level on the roll bar.  I also notched the large loops to make it easier to get the butt ends in.  The photos I took of it are too large to post.  I can email them to you if you want to see what the finished product looks like.  TB

So for an update....i ended up getting one of the rod saves but the back part wouldn't work.  The front looped section did work so that was installed around the front roll bar.  after a little thinking i decided to try something a little different.

I picked up an expandable white shower curtain rod and put that in the back above the rear window and wrapped it with a bungee cord.  I was then able to use the front loops for the tips and then slid the rod butts under the bungee.

So far this has worked out great and i can hold a good 6 rods with no interference to the front passengers.  The rear passengers may have a little less room but it should work ok and i know it works ok with a car seat in there and my 3 year old can't reach them, yet :)
