Dyerbassman Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I am starting to casually/seriously think about getting a kayak for fishing. I need some recommendations and /or advice. There are so many out there! Keep in mind this will be my first one and I am on a budget, so a Hobie with all the bells and whistles is out of the question, unfortunately. Thanks! Quote
hookedahawg Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Lots of options, what's your budget? What size/type of water you gonna be on? Sit in or sit on? Give us a little more info and wan probably help ya out. Quote
Dyerbassman Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Sit on, smaller lakes, $500-$600 for now. Quote
pabassr Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 The best way to figure out which kayak to buy, you need to go to a dealer that sells kayaks and look at what they have and sit in them. Then if you like a few of them, ask to try them out on the water. Most dealers have demo days, to try out different kayaks. Ask the dealer which sells the best and if it would be right for how you want to use it. First I would search internet on kayaks and find out what is out there. When you find the kind or style that suits you, go to dealer. Quote
hookedahawg Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 What kind of things are important to the way you fish? Standing, storage? For that price you can't go wrong with a pescador from academy. If you can save a bit more you could find a wilderness systems ride which is a fantastic boat. Very stable and worth saving for in my opinion. Quote

Super User Darren. Posted May 24, 2013 Super User Posted May 24, 2013 Up your price by $99 (not including PFD, paddle), and look at Bass Pro's newest kayak, the FS128T. It's one you can stand in. Had a look at one in-store this past weekend. Decent looking yak, ready to fish, loads of storage. A tad heavy by my standards, but sure looks like a competitor to the bigger names. http://www.basspro.com/Ascend-FS128T-SitOnTop-Angler-Kayak-Desert-Storm/product/12102505321115/ Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 24, 2013 Super User Posted May 24, 2013 Another great option in your price range is the native redfish. Quote
Dyerbassman Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Yeah its a boat and trailer I still have my boat. Just looking into a kayak, too. Thanks! Where is that boat at? Quote

Jim Mac Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 If you want a shorter, lightweight kayak, the Malibu Mini X is a great choice. I paid $399 plus $49 shipping for last year's model(new). Quote
hookedahawg Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Hey Jim how stable is the mini X? I may be interested in another yak, also where did you buy it? Thanks! Quote
Jim Mac Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Hey Jim how stable is the mini X? I may be interested in another yak, also where did you buy it? Thanks! It's very stable. That's one of the main reasons I bought it, along with it's light weight. I bought it from Kayakfishingsupplies.com, but I just checked and they are out of the 2012 model. The 2013 model is $499 for the recreational model. That's the model I have. The only thing I don't like is the center hatch is not useable, unless you reverse the hatch(which I did). If not, the front of my seat and crotch area are in the way. Quote
yaksushi Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Here are some fishing kayaks that are under $700 and some under $500 Also make sure you DEMO before you buy! Quote
