albassslayer Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 What are the specs to look for when picking a good lipless crankbait rod? and What rod have you used for lipless that you like? I can't decide what I want to use for this set up or what I want to get for this set up. I really like 7' rods, but most of the things I have read say you want a 6'6 rod to get the right presentation. Also, what power and action is best? Any help would be appreciated, if you need to know I will mostly be fishing this with braid and using a reel with a ratio between 6 and 7 because I've seen and found out that anything lower than 6 is to slow. If you need any more information or have any other suggestions about lipless crankbait set up for me, let me know I am all ears. Thanks a head of time. Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Well I just bought a Crucial that is a 7' MH with a medium fast action. Not sure how it fishes yet since it hasn't arrived, but by all accounts it should be perfect. I also like to throw them on my 7'1 MH *** with a fast action, as that rod is a tad lighter than what the ratings claim. The *** is a STEAL at $99, and balances awesome with my STX. I will even throw them on my MH Veritas, but I use mono as it has a little more stretch so you don't go ripping the jaws off the bass when you set the hook. Hope this helps. Quote
Arv Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I use one rod for my cranking. Its the Powell Endurance 695. Medium Heavy with a Moderate action. I use it for squarebills and lipless cranks. I like it because it has plenty of backbone to rip cranks through/off weeds and has a nice tip that doesn't let me rip the trebles out of a fishes mouth. I don't really throw any deep diving cranks on this rod. I don't think they make this version any more but there are definitely still Endurance cranking rods. If they are in your budget I'd suggest checking them out. I am very happy with mine. As far as line goes, I don't use braid on my cranking set up. I use copolymer. If you are going to use braid though, I would strongly suggest finding a moderate action to absorb hook sets. 1 Quote

I love using braid as I can get back almost all of my cranks that get hung up, but I think a moderate or parabolic action is a must with braid Quote
gr8outdoorz Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Moderate action is a must IMO! I use a 7' M/M for shallow cranks and lipless under 1/2 oz. Lipless 1/2 oz & over get thrown on a 7'6" MH/M. Quote
albassslayer Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Thinks sounds like so far keep it to medium heavy/ heavy and action any where from moderate to fast. I didnt put this in the original post, but I need it to be somewhat versatile. A lot of the lakes and ponds around here I fish have a lot of grass at certain times of the year, so I need it to be strong enough to run through grass with no problem and at the same time ill need it to be able to throw good in open water, with it being a stronger power i need to insure that I do not lose to much casting length as well. I usually dont use braid for my traps. In fact the only time I do is when I know I am going to be fishing in the grass or weeds. I usually will be using fluoro though, in my experience fluoro still gives you the stretch mono gives you, but is a lot more sensitive, there are times you will literally feel the fish in hale the bait before it even touches it. I tried Copolymer, but I just didnt like it, because it didnt seem strong to me. Thanks for the input there is no right answer in fishing, and not saying any of yall are wrong and/or that I am right, just giving some more detail to see what yall think. Thanks again Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 If you're fishing grass a mh/f will let you pop it free when ticking the top of the grass. In open water a Med/mod or mod-fast will work ok. You want something where the bait weight is somewhere in the middle of the listed range. You want to load the rod and get as long a cast as you can to cover water. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted May 24, 2013 Super User Posted May 24, 2013 I am using a 7' MH/Mod St Croix Mojo with 20lb braid, snaps them out of grass great. Quote
Craiger12 Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I prefer a mod/fast action for all treble hook presentations. I find it really helps keep fish pinned. I started out throwing lipless cranks on a 3 power fast action rod and I noticed a significant improvement in my landing ratio when switching to the mod/fast rod I currently use. Quote

Craiger12 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Dobyns 705cb Glass Fast.I use the graphite version and love it for lipless cranks, but I've heard great things about the fast action glass version as well. Quote
fishking247 Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 7' MH/F st. croix premier. i like the fast action expecially when "yo-yoing" the rattle baits Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 26, 2013 Super User Posted May 26, 2013 Powell 695cb. Have also used worm/jig rods (7'MH f) and it was fine. I like a graphite or composite crank rod the best. Quote
