TNBassin' Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I'm gonna pick up a Crucial to stick my Chronarch on, and I'm unsure what to get since the Crucial line is pretty technique specific. I wanted the 7'2 MH, but that xtra fast tip won't work well with cranks. They have another 7'2 MH that has a fast tip, but it's only rated up to a 3/4oz lure and I use 6Xds a ton in the summer for deep cranking and those weigh an ounce. So now I'm looking at the 7'MH with a moderate/fast tip which will be good for cranks, but would the tip be too soft for worms and jigs? Quote

If you ever get a chance to watch North Star Custom Baits video, Chris explains why he uses a moderate tip for jigs, when using braid. It's the same process as using mono and a glass rod for cranks. He says he hook up ration went way up. This is just my opinion, but with the amount of money and gear you've got over the last year or so that I know of, have you thought about a dedicated cranking rod that's graphite? I started with a Veritas winch and like the idea of a deep flex cranking rod. I traded up for an Avid as I wanted that super sensitivity and deep flex. I'm tickled to death with it. I think with any rod that's a dual purpose rod (cranking and jigs), your limiting yourself on the rods power and capability. I can take my Avid and really get nasty with a big fish using treble hooks. If I used that rod with a big stiff jig hook, I may not have near the power to get a good hook set. I'm hearing your statement the other day again "your logic costs me money" lol Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 I actually thought about my chronarch/crucial combo as a dedicated cranker, as I'm finding myself throwing more and more lipless and deep cranks. I've still got my SX and STX on MH/F rods, so those could be relegated to worm/jig combos I guess. So should I go with the 7'MH M/F Crucial for cranks? Quote

Its rated for up to 1oz so your 6XD's should be good. The 6 gear reel is a bit fast for me but some people love it. I wish they had the cranking MH in a 7'2 but it looks like either 7' or 7'6" Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted May 21, 2013 Super User Posted May 21, 2013 I agree with Rockchalks assessment and to me Shimano Rods seem true to it's power/action. For example - I'll use my MH/XF Crucial and my Avid M/F with similar techniques. Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 So for cranks go with the 7'MH with the medium fast tip correct? Quote

Super User Solution rockchalk06 Posted May 21, 2013 Super User Solution Posted May 21, 2013 Yes sir. BP part number 1856443 model #CRCC70MHA 1 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted May 21, 2013 Super User Posted May 21, 2013 Also, the Crucial will come with a green tag on the handle. Green means lifetime warranty over the counter. Any reason it breaks, take the receipt and the tag back to BP for a swap out. I think your really gonna enjoy this rod. If anything man, from the trouble with your Veritas in the past, this will otta make you happy. Quote
KevO Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I've got a 7MHM crucial crankbait rod its a good all around crankin rod. I would not throw jigs or T-rigs on it. Quote
CountBassula Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I have a Chronarch 200E6 on a Crucial 6'8" MH/F, and it's an excellent swim bait/t-rig/plastic kind of combo. I'm running 14# pline on it also. Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 Just went to BPS and they had the 7'MH M/F crank bait rod. I really liked the feel of it, and it's not very thick which surprised me. I hope it has plenty of back bone, as it was rather whippy. I came home an ordered it online from TW so I can't wait to try it out once it arrives. I was tempted to just buy it today, but I had a $5 off coupon and saved tax which is 9.75% here. Quote

That 5 bucks is nice isnt it lol It has plenty of backbone. You will be able to launch a 1.5 or Red eye a good 40 plus. Put plenty of main line on lol That was my first thought when I got my Avid cranking rod, it being thin. It had more than enough backbone to set the hook. Remember its for treble hooks so you don't have to lay the wood to em. I love cranking with a graphite rod. You can really get into the fish and don't have to "Finesse" it back to shore or the boat. Super User lmbfisherman Posted May 21, 2013 Super User Posted May 21, 2013 I don't own a Crucial cranking stick, I own a Clarus. I haven't had a problem with the backbone or scared of it breaking with a fish on. Mine is the M/MF version and the biggest fish I've battled on it so far was a 3lb smallmouth and largemouth. Never once did I feel like it was under powered. Of course it hasn't been tested by something bigger, but we all know a smallmouth is one helluva fighter. Quote

I saved almost $20 between that coupon and sales tax lol. With the medium/fast tip, is it gonna look like I have a 5lber on when I'm reeling in that 6XD or will it be ok?? Quote

It does bend the tip, but not as bad I thought it was going to. Its gonna flex it, but it should be ok. Its rated for 1oz. It has the same power and rating as my Avid, so it should act similar. When I posted my thread about my Avid, guys said they were cranking with 5 and 6XD's with no issues. Quote
TNBassin' Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 Good to know. I'm so used to MH-Fast rods, that anything else feels like a noodle. Quote
