airborne_angler Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Picked up a vintage taclebox recently and inside was a few jars of pork trailers. This stuff is old...the lids have flaking paint and there are no labels. The brine solution is still there though. Having trouble getting the bottles open to see just what kind of trailers I have. Do pork trailers and the brine solution they sit in have a shelf life? Is there any reason why, if the stuff is still soft and pliable, that it wouldn't work. Could the brine solution go bad and become a deterrent to fish? Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 20, 2013 Super User Posted May 20, 2013 I have used old rusted lid jars myself with no issues. I would say as long as the product is still soft you should be good to go. Quote
xbacksideslider Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I used some old Uncle Josh successfully this weekend; probably 25 years old. Quote

X2, As long as the jars are closed tight they're usually good. I've had old Uncle Josh jars with rusted lids that disintegrated when I tried to unscrew them with a pair of channel-locks, the contents were just fine. Quote
Lip 'em! Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Lol this post made me laugh. I was putting a new floor in my old boat a few years ago and found a bottle of black uncle josh pork frogs that had probably been in the bottom of the boat for a good 15 years. Rusted lid, oily label, and gooey contents on the inside. I opened the jar though and found the trailers to be fine! I put them in my tackle bag and the next trip out caught a 4 lber with one on the back of a jig. It made my day knowing that old school stuff will still catch em. Quote
merc1997 Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 if the jars have not been sitting out in sun, they pork should still be soft. if it happens to be a bit tuff, sometimes a bit of glycerin will soften them back up. bo Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 21, 2013 Super User Posted May 21, 2013 just remember to keep them wet after you take them out of the jar. I don't know how many pork trailers I've had dry out on me because I thought they were all the way in the water. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted May 21, 2013 Super User Posted May 21, 2013 In case anyone is interested, Overstockbait has Uncle Josh pork trailers on sale for $1.99 a jar right now. That Rage Tail selection is in the 1.99 section as well. Anacondas, Lobsters, Shad, Frog, and Craws all for 1.99 a package. STEAAAAAAAAAAAAAL. Quote
