Super User BassinLou Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 Take your pick. Swimbaits, frogs, poppers, an array of soft plastics, jigs, spinner baits, you see my point. Yes, the time of year will dictate what you should focus on but it does not dismiss the baits mentioned. What part of Florida would you be residing in? Are you primarily bank fishing or out of boat? The answer to those questions will dictate the appoach you should take. However, your options are limitless. Welcome to the fishing capital of the world. Enjoy your stay. Quote

And what about a worm is that for really bright hot days? Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 Alligators, snakes and no trespassing signs should keep busy. Maybe a sunshine stae fellow BR member can teach you ropes! Tom Quote

And what about a worm is that for really bright hot days? I throw the swimbait all year. The swim jig is most productive now during the blue gill spawn. I use a vibe worm (Bitters or Zoom) in blueberry for the tougher bite days. 1 Quote

Thanks When and where are you moving to? I can take you out and show you the ropes either on the Lake or area lakes depending on where you are. In Boca its the refuge by boat, Sirsnookalot, Boca Basser, etc know that area well as far as canals go. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 20, 2013 Super User Posted May 20, 2013 I'm near the border of Delray and Boca. IMO I believe there are 2 seasons in Florida, freshwater and saltwater fishing seasons. As the expression goes down here, " when the bass turn off the snook turn on and when the snook turn on the bass are off.............it's true ! I do a lot of canal bank fishing for bass in the late fall and early winter, not near as much from April to December. What I like better about the Palm Beach canals is that they are high banked, does make fishing more difficult but it's a good buffer from gators and snakes. I almost always wear socks due to the fire ants, watch where you step, it's when you don't watch is when you get bit and it's seldom only one. I keep it simple, for canals I use med 7' 8/17 spinning rod 15# braid using weedless flukes, jigs and a trailer, open water it's a top popper or a hard jerkbait. The only difference in my pond fishing is lighter gear with the same lures, 6/6' med 6/12 rod and 10# braid. Although I've tried many other lures and techniques I've reduced it to what works best for me and gives me the most pleasure. Quote

FshDaddy is correct. Many of those suggested are "old reliable" lures that have caught Florida Bass for quite some time. However, for the situation your stating- Shore/Bank fishing- you probably only need 4-5 lures in your arsenal- a 7" - 10" worm, a Fluke, a Jig, a Spro Frog (or your weedless Frog of choice) and a spinnerbait. WHY? Most Florida banks and shores are ringed with lily's and thick weeds. It will be extremely hard for you to use non-weedless lures in 75%- 80% of all situations. And most "sane" people don't wade or use belly boats- gators, snakes, snappin' turtles, ETC. Not to mention the fact that 80% of all big fish over 6LB's are usually caught on a Jig, Worm, frog imitation, Spinnerbait or Fluke. Oh, wait, that list sounds like every other place I've been from MN to the canals on Alligator Ally in Florida. (LOL) Colors? FshDaddy said Junebug- I agree. But, I'd throw in Red Shad, Black/Blue Tail, Black Grape, Motor Oil and Tequila Shad for good measure. Berkley 10" Worm, Gambler Paddle Tail, 6" Senko/Stick of choice rigged Weedless Wacky all have their place, (and time). Make sure to bring Flurocarbon for Springs fishing. (There are some awesome "relatively untouched" areas to fish in North Florida and along the Pan-handle- you'd be WISE to search out areas up North during your visit- Lake George!). If you can find a way to fish the ponds and canals along the Florida Turnpike- DO! (It's illegal and jammed full of Bass! BIG Bass!) Hope this helps? Quote

Super User AK-Jax86 Posted May 20, 2013 Super User Posted May 20, 2013 Best shot of catching HAWGS in any season is to have your line in the water and set that hook! Welcome to FL man enjoy the fishing Quote
BrettD Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 what about big swimbaits such as a huddleston? Or do you prefer the smaller paddle tails? Not weedless enough. If you threw a huddleston where I fish you would have a hard time getting it back to the boat. Gambler big ez's are pretty good size if I could find a bigger bait that is similiar I would try it. The big ezs with a keel weighted screw lock hook is completely weedless 99% of the time. 1 Quote
