The Commodore Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Hey all, I just got a Lew's Tournament Pro in 7.1:1 ratio and need a rod for it. I would like to spend under $120 on the rod but am open to other suggestions not too far from that price. I already have a Abu Ambassadeur T6600CL on a cheap BPS graphite 7' rod for my crank and swimbaits (not the best setup I'm sure but the fish hit it). For the Lew's I mainly want to fish carolina/t-rigs, jigs/spoons, some pitching/flipping (this will not be used for my main pitching/flipping, that is my next rod/reel purchase). I am not sure if I should use spinner/chatter/buzz baits with this setup as well. One rod I have been looking at is the *** black 7'1" MH. I hear a lot of good reviews on them. Thank you for the help. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I have the 7' 3" MH/F rod and it is a great rod. It should handle the techniques you are considering very well. I use mine mainly for T-Rigs and Jigs Quote
CiMo Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 We are in the same boat... except I'm looking for 1 rod that's a decent all around rod for my Lew's® Tournament SS TS1-H.. I don't get on a boat much yet as I'm working on buying one or saving for one rather.... so rather than make a sepwrate thread I may just steal ideas from yours or suggestions some may make, I'm probably leanong toward a MH set up so I can do a little of most things. Super User dodgeguy Posted May 18, 2013 Super User Posted May 18, 2013 falcon bucoo micro.it's one of the lightest rods made and falcon has a great reputation. Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 The fish ranger has Powell Endurance rods for 110 bucks, thats 60 bucks off. I have 9 Powell Endirance rods and 5 Lews TPs and i really believe that its a match made in heaven. I dont think you could go wrong with the 13 Fishin rods. They have been selling like hot cakes. The Commodore Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 The falcon is a little more than I am willing. What is the benefit of micro guides? The powell looks good. I hear good things about them and that price is not bad at all at fish ranger. Would the regular casting version be tge one I should consider? Quote

Yeah I am looking for an all around rod minus slow crankbait and swimbaits. I am not new to bass fishing. Been doing it since I remember but all the different preferences and abilities of different rods are new to me. Thats why I need some help. I too will be starting out not on a boat much. But over the summer my brother and I will be getting a boat so I would like this rod to fit in with that as well. Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 Ill give you a list of some of my powells and what i do with them. Endurance 714 - Jig rod Endurance 723 (1)- Spinner,Chatterbaits, Hollow body swimbaits, Swim jjigs, flukes Endurance 723 (2)-Worms, light t rigs, light jigs Endurance 725- frogs, heavy top waters, buzz baits, big jigs The 723 (7'2" MH xf) is one of the most veristile. Thats why i have two of them. But if your gonna be in some thick stuff or gonna be chunking heavier weights then id go with 714 7'1 H. The stuff i use those rods for is not neccisarily what they may have been designed forr, simply what works best for me. The 725 for example is a heavy duty 7'2 Mag HEAVY. That i use for big topwater stuff, but is also a great rod for football jigs, c rigs, big worms, and flipping and big 1oz spinner baits. Quote

I think a 1/2 oz. jig and a 1 oz. spinner might be the most I throw on it. By the end of this summer I will get a pitching/flipping/punching setup with a heavy rod. Quote
BaconStealer303 Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 I agree the endurance is an awesome rod, i just got mine this year. I use the 723 for a lot of different techniques, i even had to flip and pitch with it yesterday, and it worked fine. I definitely wouldn't miss that deal on fish ranger Quote
The Commodore Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 Ok, I am liking that endurance. The only problem is I can get the *** Black for $75 which is a good deal. But then the Endurance is $60 off. Decisions. Quote
ColdSVT Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 ***...the lews tp looks and preforms awesome on it. Quote
The Commodore Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 So the heaviest jigs I will through with this will probably be a 3/4 oz. MH or H? Quote
Capt.Bob Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I would go with a 7'-7 1/2' MHF and you may want to look at the St. Croix Avid, you can usually find a used one for around $130.00 or the Premier for less than $100, they are sometimes her in the flea market now and then. Any descent rod in the length, action, & weight mentioned would make you a good setup. Quote

IMO, get the Endurance. Thats an awesome deal at 109, I just picked up the 723 after reading this thread. If you want to throw jigs up to 3/4 I'd go with the 714 or 725 depending on the cover you're fishing. I think you'd be happy with the rod. Powell makes a great product. Quote
The Commodore Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 I just bought the Powell Endurance 723. I think it will be enough for the cover I will throw it in. Quote
