BG RTR Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Fishing from shore that has grass and cover water is stained. Using black buzz, chartruce buzz, green pumpkin brush hog and bitsy jig. Should I be throwing something different? Having no luck. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted May 18, 2013 Super User Posted May 18, 2013 Try using a fluke that resembles the forage of your area thru the grass. 1 Quote

If you're confident about the presence of fish, then by all means throw an assortment of lures that fit the conditions. You might want to try some frogs in the grass. Quote
BG RTR Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 Thx! Not sure about presence of fish other than seeing them jumping about 20 ft past where I can. Cast Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 Thx! Not sure about presence of fish other than seeing them jumping about 20 ft past where I can. Cast Story of my life. Maybe try a spinnerbait or lipless crank. Sounds like you got topwater covered with your buzzbaits and the bottom with your jig/brush hog. A spinnerbait or lipless crank will let you target the middle of the water column. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 BG. hummm. Interesting question. Here are some suggestions to consider: 1. If the water is stained try a Junebug plastic fished Texas rigged or on a 3/8 shaky head rig to get it into the grass. 2. With the water stained you may want to try a Firetiger crankbait as suggested in a post above. 3. You have to fish all three water columns. 4. Topwater - Poppers, frogs, wake baits, spinnerbaits, shallow running crankbaits, buzzbaits and Chatterbaits for starters. 5. Above the Grass - Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, swimming jigs and Chatterbaits. Consider removing the rear hook on your crankbaits and replacing the front hook with a size larger. If you catch anything with this setup you can thank Kevin VanDam. 6. On the Bottom - Jigs and pigs, Senkos, shaky heads, JIKA rigs, MOJO rigs, split-shot rig and anything that will get into the grass. Hit any openings in the grass with your plastics. 7. Hit the pond before sunup and at dusk/sundown with topwaters and wake baits over and by the grass. 8. Bring your needle nose pliers to remove hooks safely. Your goal is to find what the bass want to eat on that particular day and time. Keep a log including all fishing conditions and baits used. Check out the Free Fishing Log under Tools at the top of the Forum's page and fill one out after every trip and keep it in a three-ring binder for future use. By doing this you wil see the overall pattern of the body of water which is amazing after 60 fishing adventures. Remember, spinnerbaits are designed to go through grass with little problem although you will have to remove the grass from the bait after each or a few casts. Let us know how you do and what biats are the most productive. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 If the jumpers are bass and you can't reach them, I suggest you get a bait like a Zara Spook. You can cast them a mighty long ways. Quote
Skeeter Driver Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Agree with Jig Man on this one. If you see fish breaking the surface and you're confident they're bass, I would recommend as Jig does, that you need to "get" to that area to see if they'll crack it. As funny as this will sound, spinning gear with a Texas rig lizard or worm may also help if you just can't cast anything else that far. I know it sounds odd, but if nothing else will work, you can at least get something out that's attached to a line in your hand :-) Good luck. Quote
