Bobby Uhrig Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 GOTTA READOK I found that BARN FIND BS car that everyone has heard since they were kids. That OH I heard the story of that vintage vette in grandmas garage WELL I FOUND ITHoly CRAP--so Im driving through this neighborhood with my son ...-I see this 73 year old man on a snapper lawnmower . His garage is open and I see tail lights _ I said I know what that is. I stop and get out of the truck and look. There is junk piled all over this car- I ask him -what ya got in the garage. He smiles and says a 1963 corvette convertible. I asked where did ya get it . He said he is the original owner and bought it in 1963. I asked if he could show it to me -sure he says. As I got closer I couldn't believe my eyes. MORE **** piled on this beautiful vintage car.. Its all original -even down to the paint. It hadn't moved in over 35 years. So I ask the big question- Would ya consider selling it. He looks at me and says Nah-I think I will get to it one day- I said 20,000 he said no--30,000 he says no--for the hell of it said 40,000 He said nah ,he had it so long he just going to keep it.. We are talking original owner that adds huge value to it. I spent another 15 minutes in awe and then I had to leave. He was a true gentleman and I wished him well...SO THATS MT STORY_ What a waste of a car This car from an original owner restores is worth 125-150000 Quote
bigfishtim Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 AWWW MAN!! Keep on him,cut his grass, clean his garage,do something... Quote
RoachDad Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 man, that story hurts me feelings. ANd after looking at the pics, I have to go change my contacts. Quote
MrSwimJig Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Guys from Gas Monkey would drool all over that...... Beautiful find and definitely keep in contact with him, that is a Diamond in the Rough if I have ever seen one. Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted May 17, 2013 Super User Posted May 17, 2013 That great car being used as a shelf....That's just wrong. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 17, 2013 Super User Posted May 17, 2013 Well, I consider you a friend, but trying to steal the car from an old man for $20,000 is pretty sad. I understand the difference between "bid" and "ask", but +/- $100K is fair, $20K - $40K is not. Quote
aquaholic Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I don't think id be a big fan of someone asking to see in my garage. But then again I like my privacy Quote
Matt Jungblut Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I know of another 1 here in my town little old lady and husband own the corvette a 67 camaro and and even older car cant think of it off the top of my head all in mint condition she was tellin me about a year ago they just upped there home owners insurance so they got cars reapraised. She said they bought the vette for 15,000 and was told it was worth 75,000 now. She was quite shocked Quote
Scorcher214 Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I'm not much of a car guy but my grandpa is a big corvette guy. He has a 2003 but whenever he gets going about them he mentions the 1963 Corvette. Specifically the split window. He'd probably have a heart attack if he saw these pictures. Quote
mtaag3 Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 It would probably take you 100K to do a factory correct frame off restoration though. The father of a girl I used to date found a '63 hardtop in some old ladies' garage. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 18, 2013 Super User Posted May 18, 2013 That's a once in a life time car, he knows it too, if you really want it , you need to quit trying to buy it at a junk yard price, everyone loves a great deal for sure but the only great deal in this case would be you being its second owner. If you really want the car, go spend some time with the man, make sure he knows what your intentions are with the car, let him know you guys can take her out for a spin anytime, there is a 69 Mach1 with a 429 Cobra sitting not far from my house sitting under a tree just rotting away, I know how you feel when you see things like this and they wont budge, good luck to ya Bobby, I hope he sells it to ya some day! Snakehead Whisperer Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 This car from an original owner restores is worth 125-150000 I'm not a Corvette guy by any means but... if the car is completely original, wouldn't it be more valuable un-restored? Nice find, btw. Looks like it would clean up really nicely. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted May 18, 2013 Super User Posted May 18, 2013 Well, I consider you a friend, but trying to steal the car from an old man for $20,000 is pretty sad. I understand the difference between "bid" and "ask", but +/- $100K is fair, $20K - $40K is not. A full restoration on that car to make it worth the $120-125K price will run you $60-70K. So insinuating that he is trying to steal it at even $30 is not right. If he invested $30K, and then another $70K to make it worth $120K, he is only due that to his total output and time. There is no way I would offer "+/-$100K" to spend another $60-70K to restore a car that would then only be worth $125K. Not smart business.... I'm not a Corvette guy by any means but... if the car is completely original, wouldn't it be more valuable un-restored? Nice find, btw. Looks like it would clean up really nicely. If it were completely original and in good condition, then probably yes, but not having run in that many years, and the crap stored on it, just to get it in drivable shape, would need everything rubber replaced(tires, belts, seals etc.) and then the paint is ruined on it. Needs to be restored! Jeff 1 Quote

Needs to be restored! Jeff Agreed. Replacing stuff like window rubber and rebuilding engine/trans doesn't really compromise the originality of the car like a respray does though. In the air cooled VW world patina is more coveted than shiny new paint, and I'm a hardcore original paint buff (pun intended.) Different strokes for different folks. It's pretty difficult to tell the condition from the photos anyway, as half the car is covered with stuff. If there's no serious metal work necessary I would think the car would buff out nicely. Nice car either way. My 1965 VW Bus still wears its original paint and shows its age, and I wouldn't ever consider repainting it. I get asked all the time when I'm going to paint it, and what color though My truck has been primered black since I've owned it, and I've considered using paint stripper and scotch brite pads to uncover the OG paint beneath it. I've known some people who have uncovered amazing original paint on vehicles that have been previously resprayed. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 18, 2013 Super User Posted May 18, 2013 Agree with Jeff. Would take a substantial amount of money to make that car pristine. Cool story. Quote
Trailer Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Everybody is throwing out a bunch of dollar figures on it's value, but what options did it have (motor, tranny, color)? Just curious. I love watching Barrett-Jackson every year. I'm not an appraiser, I just finance them. Original owner and a story go a long way for sure. What about the paperwork? Did he have any of the stuff like a build sheet or bill of sale? Quote
mtaag3 Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 It's a '63 convertible. Any options would only increase the value unless it was a throw together parts car originally. If its a numbers matching factory car the minimums will still be very high. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 If it is ok with Bobby I'll add my father in law's Corvette story. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Interesting story, I don't see $100K ever happening though. C2s are valuable, but it's a convertable, not a split window 63, so it's definately not the highest value C2. Frankly 40K might have been overpriced, it's largely dependant on what paperwork he has, that stuff is absolutely everything. Reguardless, hell of a waste, how could someone treat one like that...then turn down a $40K offer? They think it's that valuable, yet they treat it like crap. 1 Quote
