averagebass123 Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I made a small little fly thing out of some wood the other day, and recently I have been testing it out on the local ponds for grass carp. It is so fun watching the slow, but exciting chase then the bite off the surface, and hearing the drag scream when they make 30 yard runs. I will be getting a fly reel very soon to use regular dry flies, but I can't cast them on ultra-light gear so i just made one out of wood. I have caught a few on it already, all under 15 lbs, but a pond less than a mile from my house is packed with 30-40 lb giants. I havent gone there yet cause the place where they all hang out is too far to cast the little wooden fly (20 - 30 ft). Can't wait to catch some giants on a fly reel. Anyone else here fly-fish for grass carp? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 19, 2013 Global Moderator Posted May 19, 2013 I have caught one on a fly rod and it is a thrill. The bigger ones don't seem to feed off the surface as much and are much more difficult to catch. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 yup and one of the most fun fish to catch on a fly rod in my opinion. 1 Quote
averagebass123 Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 I got the fly reel saturday night and used it a few hours and already have got 2 carp. Both were about 5-8 lbs, but i will go to the other ponds later with some 40-50 lbers Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 19, 2013 Super User Posted May 19, 2013 If you are going after 40-50 lbers i hope your reel has good drag and make sure your backing to fly line knot is solid and you have at least 100 yards of backing on there because you will need it. I caught one that i estimate to be 15-20 lbs on my 4wt and he took me well into my backing to the point where i was starting to see the spool. I was also shore bound which made it even more difficult to chase him around so i pretty much had to let him do his thing. Quote

HLNichols Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 I often ATTEMPT to catch carp on the fly. Whether or not that works is extremely variable. I like to use the carp bitter fly. I tie them myself. The pattern can be found on In The Riffle. Pretty good fly, easy to tie, relatively cheap. Also works for bass... Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Grass carp here in Va are hitting Cicadas on top. I caught a couple bass fishing with a crankbait. They explode on it as soon as it hits the water. Biggest I landed was 22# but I had an estimated 30+ get off. Pretty amazing runs and fights. I havea 9wt flyrod I might try. This one went about 15# ...Bill Quote

Broc Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I have just recently turned onto carp fishing. I hooked into a 30 pounder eariler this week and had to put my trolling motor in reverse so he wouldnt pull me to the middle of the lake. I havent fly fished for them yet, but will later this week. They fight like a runaway frieght train. Quote
