I am haveing problems with fluorocarbon line breaking not at the knot but about 30 to 40 foot into the cast.I am thinking it is caused by kinks in the line from loose coils.I am useing a baitcast reel and Berkley 100 % fluorocarbon line.I must be doing something wrong.Any suggestions.

take a q-tip and wipe all your guides to check for any cracks or knicks that are cutting the line.

I had problems with flouro until I switched to P-Line.

It is not breaking at the knot.

Oh sorry I really misread your post. A buddy of mine was having the same issue. His was due to him backlashing quite a bit and the line would eventually cut itself deeper into his spool and he would eventually make a long cast and there would go his lure flying with 50 feet of line attached. If you dont often backlash, I would also check your reel to see if there is anywhere it is scrapping the line there. I only use fluoro as leader to braid because i have seen so many people have problems like this, and its cheaper

Sounds like line twists are weakening the line.

Berkley line is crap

All good suggestions in this thread.

Make sure that you have your spool tension tight enough. If there is even a little bit of slack there, the line can coil loosely onto the spool and overlap itself when retrieving (unless you are really good with your thumb.) These kinks won't look/feel like backlash, but they are doing the same thing to your line. You can usually pull them out with a light tug, but the line is kinked on itself nonetheless. I've had line breakage with mono due to this in the past, so I'm sure it's possible with fluoro which is more brittle. Check your spool after the lure hits the water but before you begin your retrieve and see if there is any loose line on it, even slightly loose. There shouldn't be any.

I lost one really good fish because I was too lazy to retie after noticing a nearly microscopic nick in a fluorocarbon leader. Never again. I check the line for nicks and check the knots frequently, especially with fluorocarbon. 40' is a long way to dig down checking for nicks, but you can hold the line between your thumb and index finger during your retrieve to feel for rough spots.

Yes I wholeheartedly agree about Berkley.  Especially vanish...I've changed my lines to 90% braid with floro leaders.  The other 10% is PLine Floroclear or Yo Zuri Hybrid.  I now use Seaguar Red Label as my leaders.

For one, I am not a huge fan of Berkley 100% fluoro. Also, if you are 100% sure there are not nicks caused by your guides then it is likely due to kinks caused by backlash or any other misfortunes that causes weakness in the line. Cast out as far as you can and retrieve the line through your fingers and if there are any noticeable nicks or weakened areas you need to cut the line and use fresh line.

I've used Berkley 100% fluoro and had no problems that you mentioned, but did not enjoy the line. Get some sunline FC sniper or Seaguar InvizX and call it a day, it is far less problematic and is worth the extra money and longevity you will get from. I have not used BPS Fluoro but have heard good things, so that might be a good choice as well.

I am liking the BPS XPS Flourocarbon.

To my understanding this line is manufactured by Seaguar. Not sure, and I could be wrong. The Red Seaguar line is less expensive at BPS, and is definitely every bit as good.

I had the same problem with Stren FC, it wasn't my setup causing the issue but every time I would birds-nest it would weaken the line and my lure would go flying.  I had two spools of stren FC and I used this as leader material until it did the same thing, cheap FC if it gets bent it weakens the line.  Now I am trying Seaguar Blue Label Leader material ,if this fails I not sure that I will be using FC again.  Now I use the stren FC to practice tying knots and some of the stuff directly off the spool breaks easily, a bit disappointing since in the past stren was the only line company used.  I have read people loving Tatsu but 40$ for line that will need to wait till next year.

I've been using 10 lb PLine 100% flouro on my spinning rigs for about five years with no issues whatsoever.  I recently switched to 12 ln fused braid with a flouro leader.  I use 12 lb PLine flouro on all my baitcasters except one which I spool with 15 lb copolymer (PLine CXX).  What convinced me to use PLine was when my wife causgt a 10-6 LMB on a spinning rig spooled with 6 lb PLine flouro - in heavy hydrilla.

Good stuff.  There may be line as good, who knows, but I get good results so see no need to switch.
