Packard Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I am also a junior considering colleges with good fishing nearby. Clemson is probably the best college with extremely good fishing nearby. Quote
d3bf48 Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Make sure to spell sophomore right on your appIications. Good luck, see if you can talk to someone at your school about the application process and scholarships. 2 Quote
Dyerbassman Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Not sure a Bass Fishing forum is where you need to be asking for this kind of advice...maybe a school counselor? Or your parents? Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 14, 2013 Super User Posted May 14, 2013 I recruit Virginia for LSU and here are a few tips to consider: 1. How far from home will you travel and feel comfortable? 2. What will be your major? 3. How many courses are offered in your major? 4. Do you like big schools or small schools. 5. Go interview with an Assistant Dean of the college (universities have colleges for different studies) and find out about their classroom size to professors; any scholarship or grant monies available; any overseas opportunities; any community opportunities available; and anything else you want to know about that specific college, be it Arts and Sciences, Agricultrue, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, etc. 6. Ask if the school has free tutoring. 7. Do you like a good social life? Check out the clubs and fraternities. 8. Ask if you will be scanned for scholarship money when you apply. 9. Do you enjoy big time sports? If so, consider the major D-1 football schools. Not many in Maryland unless you count the University of Maryland as a big time school since they are now in the Big Ten. 10. Check out their mass communications school and English department to see if they can help you with your writing career. Where do they rank in the country with other public institutions. Do they have any famous writers or talking heads as alumni? Just make a list of your concerns and interview the schools and their colleges. Tour the schools with a parent so you can get a feel of it and if you get a guy feeling about it being home for you for the next five to six years. You are doing great with your articles in BAM. I really enjoy them. So take what you have created and build on it by going to a reputable school that has a strong writing program. Check out Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Penn State, LSU and even Ole Miss. Have fun selecting your college. You will love school. Quote

My Dad went to the university of MD, my mom a small school in PA. I really don care about any sports, besides a college fishing team- but even that's not essential. Quote

Super User Sam Posted May 14, 2013 Super User Posted May 14, 2013 In Virginia we have a college recruiting association that handles college recruiting throughout the state. Here is their web link: http://vacrao.org/ Ask them for their counterpart in Maryland. If there is none you can attend the big college fair at George Mason University in Fairfax where there will be over 150 universities in attendance. Ask the VACRAO contact when that fair will be held. You can ask each one about the major you are interested in and what is necessary, grade wise, to get into their school. A small school may be best for you since you seem not to be into the sports or social life which is part of the fabric of a college or university. Good luck. Just graduate with that degree. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted May 14, 2013 Super User Posted May 14, 2013 When you're talking about a degree you're going to be centered on for the rest of your life probably (either chasing a career in the field or paying for the schooling), the last thing you need to be thinking about, is how big are the bass I might be able to catch. I guess, if you want it to be that easy, just hope that The University of Texas offers Marketing as a major. 2 Quote

Having a place to go fishing nearby and a bass team can help you relieve stress and make connections that can be used in the real world. I don't think anyone is advocating going to school based solely upon how good the fishing is, it is just a bonus. Quote
